Bethlehem, PA – Tonight was the 700th win for Lehigh making Lehigh just the ninth Division I wrestling program to reach this milestone. No. 5 Lehigh (14-3, 5-0 EIWA) defeated North Carolina State (5-6, 1-1 ACC) by a final of 33-8.
The dual began at 133, as freshman Cory Coopmerman set the pace for Lehigh with a 6-0 win over sophomore Daniel Pacitti of N.C. State. Pacitti was disqualified at the end of the second period after flagrant misconduct was called against him. Prior to the disqualification Pacitti trailed Cooperman 4-0. At 141, senior Tristan Boyd of Lehigh won a 6-1 decision over junior Ryan McCallum. Sophomore Tommy Rohn and junior Jake Giamoni of N.C.State squared off at 149. The match was tied 0-0 up until the middle of the third period when Giamoni took an injury timeout. Shortly after the timeout Giamoni picked up the win for N.C. State in a 4-1 decision.
At 157, freshman Brian Lamay came out strong against junior Scott Garren of N.C. State. After two periods Lamay dominated and finished with a tech fall.
The match between senior Ted Dufresne and junior Dustin Kawa at 165 was the closest of the night. After two periods it was squared at 4-4. In an intense battle, which was decided in the last seconds before the end of the third, Kawa won an 8-5 decision over Dufresne. The match at 184 saw freshman Travis Frick defeat Jon Goodwin 5-3. Junior All-American Jon Trenge picked up a fall at 197, at the 2:04 mark. At heavyweight junior Joe Sahl led freshman Leroy Harris 5-4 at the end of the first period and 8-4 at the conclusion of the second. Sahl cruised to an 18-7 major decision. The final match at 125 was between junior Mario Stuart and senior George Cintron of N.C. State. Cintron led 1-0 after two periods. After a quick timeout, Stuart positioned himself for a takedown to lead the match 3-2. Then just seconds before the end of the third period Cintron picked up the 4-3 win for N.C. State.
"I was a little nervous going into tonight," head coach Greg Strobel admitted. "But our guys fought hard. I thought we wrestled them (N.C. State) better this year than we did last year."
The Mountain Hawks will wrestle their second dual in as many days when No. 6 Cornell comes to town for a 1:00 start. Both matches will be carried live on both the Lehigh website at www.lehigh.edu and on 1230 AM, The Sports Monster. Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh and Service Electric Cable TV-2 will also televise the match live. Viewers with DirecTV can find the broadcast on channel 628. Saturday is also Jon Trenge Bobblehead Day. The first 500 fans with a ticket to see Lehigh-Cornell will receive a free bobblehead in the All-Americans likeness.
