Hampton, VA - Lehigh’s Mountain Hawks soared to a scintillating 22-12 victory Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the Virginia Dual Meet Championships in Hampton, VA. The team was sparked by a sensational effort in the first three weights.
Terrance Clendenin came up huge with a 9-5 win to open the match at 125. Trailing 2-0 in the second period, Terrance scored a three-point near fall and added two escapes, a takedown and riding time to win. Cory Cooperman then electrified the crowd with a spectacular 9-0 major decision over No. 6 Josh Moore. During the bout, he strained a shoulder muscle but expects to return this evening. Tristan Boyd then completed the reversal of three bout results from last weekend by defeating DeWitt Driscoll, 3-2, on a spin behind takedown with 32 seconds left in the bout.
The Mountain Hawks kept rolling, winning seven of the 10 bouts to secure the win. In a surprise, the University of Nebraska—going without their best wrestler—upset No. 4 ranked Illinois, 20-17, meaning the third and fourth seeds will meet in the finals tonight at 8:30 pm.
