Hempstead, NY – No. 7 Lehigh (9-3) cruised past No. 18 Hostra (6-4) by a 29-9 score on Sunday afternoon. The Mountain Hawks won 8 of the match's ten bouts on their way to their fifth straight dual victory.
Freshman Cory Cooperman, No. 8 at 133, started the match off on the right foot for Lehigh, winning by fall at 5:34. The Mountain Hawks would fall behind 9-6 before No. 7 Derek Zinck knotted the score with an 8-6 win at 157 over nationally ranked Mike Patrovich. No. 3 Troy Letters scored a major decision over No. 6 Noel Thompson to put the Mountain Hawks ahead to stay 13-9. No. 10 Brad Dillon and No. 14 Travis Frick stretched it to four straight bouts for Lehigh going into the match up at 197. In the battle of the nation’s No. 2 and 4 wrestlers, it was the Mountain Hawks’ Jon Trenge who came away with the 6-4 victory over the lesser-ranked Chris Skretkowicz. Junior Joe Sahl needed extra time win his heavyweight bout, before classmate Mario Stuart closed the match with a 6-4 decision at 125.
"Never seen Letters wrestle as well as he did today," head coach Greg Strobel said. "Letters major was a great bout. Trenge did very well against the nation’s No. 4 ranked wrestler, picking up a big win."
None of the five consecutive wins have come at home. Lehigh has defeated Pittsburgh and Hofstra on the road, while handling Edinboro, Penn State, and Nebraska on a neutral mat at the Virginia Duals.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Friday, January 24, when they travel to Navy for a dual match. The following day, Lehigh hosts a pair of duals at the Stabler Arena as Brown comes to town for a 1:00 match, with Harvard following at 3:00. Both the Navy and Harvard duals will air on the Lehigh website and on 1230 AM, The Sports Monster. Additionally, Service Electric Cable TV-2 will televise the Harvard dual live.
