West Point, NY – After dropping the first three bouts, 12th ranked Lehigh recorded four consecutive major decisions en route to a 25-22 victory over Army, Sunday afternoon in Christl Arena. The Brown and White improve to 12-5 overall and remain undefeated in the EIWA at 6-0. The Black Knight’s fall to 7-7 overall and 3-2 in the EIWA.
At 141 Tristan Boyd took on Army’s 11th ranked Phillip Simpson. After scoreless first and second periods, Boyd allowed Simpson to escape and scored the first takedown of the bout. The takedown would be Boyd’s only points as Simpson then quickly scored a takedown of his own. With a point for riding time, Simpson recorded the 4-2 decision over Boyd to put Army up by three.
The Black Knight’s Eric Miller ended Troy Minarovic’s two bout winning streak. At 149, Miller recorded two near falls to record the 7-1 decision over Minarovic.
Jeremy Connor kept Lehigh scoreless, pinning Ted Dufresne at 157. Dufresne fought off countless Connor attacks before being pinned in the third period.
At 165 Chris Vitale didn’t need two periods to warm up. Vitale went into the third period with a comfortable 14-5 lead. Vitale recorded eight takedowns and one reversal to earn the 19-7 major decision over Jeremy Connor. Vitale now stands at 19-1 on the season.
Following Vitale’s lead, Brad Dillon recorded a 14-4 major decision over Army’s Matt Bernard. Dillon has won eight consecutive bouts and boasts 17-6 overall record.
Seventh ranked Rob Rohn recorded the third consecutive major decision for Lehigh, defeating Army’s Graig Cooper 15-5, to tie the score at 12. Rohn is currently riding a ten bout winning streak.
Second ranked Jon Trenge didn’t allow the Black Knight’s John Paxton any offensive points en route to his 16-3 major decision. Trenge remains undefeated in the EIWA and stands at an amazing 24-3 overall, with two losses being to top ranked Cael Sanderson of Iowa.
In the heavyweight bout, Shawn Laughlin continued to turn it up in the last half on the season, as he won his third consecutive bout. Laughlin recorded a 6-2 decision over Army’s Tom Anderson.
A double forfeit at 125 moved the action to 133. The Black Knight’s took the final bout of the afternoon. Lehigh’s Anthony Shave dropped a 10-0 major decision to TJ Grider.
