Lehigh overpowers Rider

Lawrenceville, NJ-12th ranked Lehigh recorded its fifth consecutive win over Rider, defeating the Broncs 38-3, Thursday night in Alumni Gym. The Mountain Hawks improve to 10-5 overall and the Broncs fall to 6-9.
Tristan Boyd started things off for Lehigh at 141. Boyd, missing the action last week due to a head injury, didn’t skip a beat. The junior recorded four reversals and four takedowns to tab the 19-11 major decision over Rider’s John Robinson.
Troy Minarovic continued to fill in for Mike Pirozzola at 149. Minarovic ended his four match losing streak with a solid 8-2 decision over Rider’s Joe Pollard and improved his record to 5-8.
At 157, Ted Dufresne wrestled in his second official dual meet of the season. Dufresne has not wrestled for the Mountain Hawks since appearing in the National Duals at 165, at Ohio State. Dufresne fell to Rider’s Nick Harrington in an intense overtime session. Dufresne fell in a close 4-4 decision, giving the Broncs their first points of the match.
Chris Vitale added one to his winning streak defeating Cory DeBias of Rider at 165. Vitale, ranked fourth in the nation, recorded 14-2 major decision to put the Mountain Hawks on top 11-3. The All-American now stands at an impressive 17-1 on his senior campaign.
At 174, Brad Dillon captured his sixth straight win over the Bronc’s Nick Catone. After a scoreless first period, Catone escaped in the second to take the 1-0 lead. Dillon escaped shortly after to force the bout into overtime. Dillon recorded a reversal in the overtime session to tab the win.
Rob Rohn, ranked seventh in the nation, notched the first pin of the night at 184. Rohn pinned Rider’s Bob Pizzuto in 5:50 to put the Mountain Hawks up 20-3. With the win, Rohn earned his ninth consecutive win and moves to 17-4 on he season.
At 197, second ranked Jon Trenge followed Rohn’s lead and pinned the Broncs 19th ranked Greg Sawyer. Trenge made it look easy, pinning Sawyer in just a 1:55. Trenge moves to an amazing 22-3 on the season and put Lehigh up 26-3.
In the heavyweight bout Shawn Laughlin tabbed his first win in six bouts. Laughlin recorded a takedown and two escapes to tab the 4-1 over Rider’s Vinny D’Agustino.
At 125, Mario Stuart tabbed at 5-2 decision over Rider’s Jerold Limongelli to give Lehigh a commanding 32-3 going into the final bout. Stuart, having a superb second half of the season, improves to 12-7 overall.
Lehigh’s Dan Hyman recorded an easy win by forfeit at 133 to finish the match.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action Saturday February 16th, when they host North Carolina in Grace Hall. That dual is scheduled to begin at 1:00.
