Bethlehem, PA- Facing their second opponent from the Big East this season, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks avenged a 3-0 loss last season to the visiting Pittsburgh Panthers with a 2-0 victory Friday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Thanks to phenomenal play from freshman midfielder Gina Lewandowski and a typically stellar performance by goalkeeper Erin Iwaskiewicz, the Mountain Hawks won their fourth straight game and moved an all-time best three games over .500.
Lehigh (4-1, 0-0) got out of the gate quickly in the first half on the first of two goals on the night by Lewandowski. After the ball bounced around in front of the net, Lewandowski got a foot on it and put it into the left corner to give the Mountain Hawks the lead. Pittsburgh played tight the rest of the half, and Lehigh took a 1-0 lead into intermission.
The second half started out in similar fashion, as Lewandowski netted her second goal (and fourth on the season) with an absolute blast from 25 yards out. Goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi, who played well in goal for the Panthers (2-2, 0-0), was helpless as the ball sailed perfectly into the upper left-hand corner of the goal.
"This was the closest to 90 minutes of perfection we’ve had so far," said head coach Manny Oudin. "Pittsburgh was the second best team we’ve played. I think our winning attitude at home is paying off."
Coach Oudin also raved about the play of Lewandowski, who now is tied with fellow freshman Lauren Calabrese for the team lead with 8 points. "Lewandowski doesn’t play like a freshman. She had two great finishes tonight, and she really makes our team go."
The Mountain Hawks will attempt to continue their winning ways Wednesday night at Stony Brook, in their last game before the start of Patriot League play (next Saturday against arch-rival Lafayette). Wednesday’s kickoff is scheduled for 7:00.
