Mountain Hawks offense impresses again in win

9/21/2003 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

Hamden, CT – If the early season is any indication, Lehigh’s offensive woes (3-1-0, 0-0-0 Patriot League) are a thing of the past. The Mountain Hawks won their second straight road contest Sunday afternoon, defeating Quinnipiac 4-3 in overtime.
Freshman defender Tara Stottlemyer scored 90 seconds into the extra period to give Lehigh the victory in a back and forth affair that saw the Mountain Hawks take the lead on three separate occasions.
Coach Manny Oudin thought there were valuable lessons in this game for his team. "It’s important to know we can win close games in OT," said Coach Oudin, "and we did that today. It’s always tough to win away from home, but it’s important that we are able to do it."
Trailing 1-0 in the first half, Adrienne Grunwald put Lehigh on the board on a free kick from 25 yards out, her first goal of the season. Later, freshman forward Lauren Calabrese deflected one in off a corner kick, giving the Mountain Hawks a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
In the second half, after Quinnipiac tied it up at 2-2, Gina Lewandowski gave the Mountain Hawks the lead again with her second goal of the season. But Quinnipiac was persistent and notched another sending the game into overtime, where Lehigh prevailed.
After scoring only seven goals all of last year, the Mountain Hawks now have ten in only four games this season. Lehigh continues its season at home on Friday against Pittsburgh at 7:00. The game will be broadcast on Lehigh’s website at www.lehigh.edu.
