Lehigh defeats Holy Cross in season opener

9/19/2003 12:00:00 AM | Football

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh began its season with a 38-20 victory over Holy Cross (0-1, 0-1 Patriot League) on Saturday at Goodman Stadium before a crowd of 8,697. The Mountain Hawks got on the board early with an impressive scoring drive of 75 yards on the game’s first possession, that ended with senior quarterback Chad Schwenk hitting senior Dave Crockett on an 18-yard pass for the early 7-0 lead. Lehigh then added two more touchdowns and a field goal to take a 23-14 halftime lead.
Schwenk was very impressive in the early going throwing for 274 yards, two touchdowns and rushing for another in the first half alone. He finished with 302 yards passing for the game. Junior tight end Adam Bergen was on the receiving end of Schwenk’s other first half touchdown pass, and caught nine passes on the afternoon for 101 yards.
The Mountain Hawk defense opened the second half with a blocked field goal attempt by the Crusaders on the opening drive. However, the remainder of the third quarter was scoreless as both teams struggled to get anything going on the offensive side. Holy Cross scored an early fourth quarter touchdown to come within three, but sloppy play by the Crusaders (lost fumble and a safety) and a two-yard touchdown run by senior Dave Wilson with :24 seconds remaining allowed the Mountain Hawks to pull away late. Two fourth quarter field goals by senior Matt Douglas, gave him 12 points for the game.
Senior Trevor Micklos had a great day for Lehigh on the defensive side with a number of jarring hits, an interception and a pass deflection. Sophomore Greg Petrosky, in his debut handling the return duties, was very effective with over 100 return yards on the afternoon.
Lehigh (1-0, 1-0 Patriot League) returns to action next week when the Mountain Hawks play host to defending league champion Fordham at Goodman Stadium in a game that will go a long way in determining this season's champion. Game time is set for 1:00, and tickets are available at (610) 7LU-GAME.
