Easton, PA – Junior running back Jermaine Pugh carried 23 times for 127 yards but it wasn’t enough as No. 20 Lehigh fell short by a 14-7 score at Lafayette in the 138th meeting of college football’s most-played rivalry on Saturday afternoon. Lehigh finishes the season at 8-4, 4-3 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette goes to 7-5, 5-2 in the league.
The game marked the ninth 100-yard game of the season for Pugh, who also caught two passes for 16 yards on the afternoon. Junior quarterback Chad Schwenk did all that he could for the Mountain Hawks, including a 1-yard scramble for an early second quarter touchdown to put Lehigh up 7-0 as he dove into the end zone, but Lehigh was unable to produce anymore scoring. Schwenk wound up with 123 yards through the air on the afternoon, but several dropped passes by Lehigh receivers prevented it from being more.
The nearly unbreakable Lehigh defense played well again, but for the first time this season, gave up a touchdown in the fourth quarter. That touchdown would prove to be the difference in the game.
Lafayette sophomore tailback Joe McCourt was named the game’s MVP as he rushed for 103 yards, including the eventual game-winning touchdown from three yards out with just over four minutes left in the contest. Lehigh freshmen Aaron Argenta and Eric Rath finished up their fantastic season with a combined seven catches for 68 yards on the afternoon.
The Lafayette victory snaps a seven game Lehigh winning streak in the series, dating back to 1994.
