Colgate snaps Lehigh's home streak

9/19/2003 12:00:00 AM | Football

Bethlehem, PA – Colgate ended Lehigh’s 27 game home winning streak by a score of 28-14, before a crowd of 15,023, the eighth largest in Goodman Stadium history. The number sixteen Mountain Hawks got off to a very rough start trailing 28-0 and could never recover. The loss drops Lehigh to 7-3, 3-2 in the Patriot League and improves Colgate to 7-3, 4-1. Lehigh now must win its final two games and receive help from elsewhere in order to have a shot at the league title.
Making his first start, sophomore Chris Brown rushed for all four of Colgate’s touchdowns. He was backed up by a powerful running game, led by Ray LaMonica who carried 23 times for 165 yards.
Lehigh had several scoring opportunities repeatedly driving into Colgate territory, but could not seem to punch it in the end zone. The Mountain Hawks saw their ground game, which had carried them in their last two games, stuck in neutral all day long. Lehigh only gained 75 yards on the ground and junior Jermaine Pugh, who was ranked first in the Patriot League in rushing, was held to only 28 yards on the ground.
With their ground game struggling, Coach Lembo decided to go to the air with juniors Chad Schwenk and Matt Shiels splitting the game by halves at quarterback. Schwenk did a nice job of spreading the ball out to different receivers, but could not get the ball into the end zone. Shiels came on in relief to start the fourth quarter and had some success as he threw two touchdown passes and pulled Lehigh to within two scores, but in the end, Lehigh simply ran out of time. Junior Steve Hluschak had an outstanding game for Lehigh as he caught nine passes for 84 yards and was complimented by sophomore tight end Adam Bergen, who had seven catches for 69 yards and one touchdown.
Lehigh will try to return to the win column on Saturday, November 16 when Bucknell visits Goodman Stadium for a contest slated to start at 12:30. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Matt Salvaterra bobblehead doll. Tickets to the game can be purchased by calling (610) 7LU-GAME. Service Electric Cable TV2 will broadcast the game, as will Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh. The game can also be heard live on 1470 AM radio and on the Lehigh website at www.lehigh.edu.
