Washington, DC – Senior Cat Nicholson scored 12 second half points but it wasn’t enough as American snapped Lehigh’s six game winning streak with a 53-47 win at Bender Arena on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Mountain Hawks to 8-2 in the Patriot League (11-11 overall), and a game back of first place Holy Cross in the league standings. American improves to 14-9 overall and 7-3 in the league with the victory. The Mountain Hawks were plagued by poor shooting in the first half, and Lehigh trailed 25-20 at the break. The Brown & White were just 7-of-24 from the floor in the first twenty minutes, and 2-of-12 from beyond the arc. In the second half, Lehigh erased a ten point deficit, but could never gain control of the contest. Despite shooting 4-of-9 from long range in the second half, the Mountain Hawks came up short. Lehigh was led by Nicholson, who scored 15 points and connected on a season-high 5 three-point field goals. Junior Jana Ransom added nine points in the loss, including 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Ransom had Lehigh’s only eight attempts from the stripe. The Eagles out-rebounded Lehigh 40-32 for the game, and were paced by Katryn Costenbader’s 18 points. Chanel Hunt added 9 in the win. The Mountain Hawks return to the hardwood on Friday, when Lehigh visits Army. Game time is set for 5:30 from Christl Arena, and the action can be heard on 91.3 FM throughout the Lehigh Valley and worldwide on the Internet at www.lehigh.edu.
