Ithaca, NY – Lehigh won its third EIWA title in four years as five Mountain Hawks won the individual title at their weight. Lehigh tallied 138 points to repeat as champions. With the effort, eight of Lehigh’s 10 starters will travel to the NCAA Championships.
Three of the Mountain Hawks four freshman took home individual titles. Cory Cooperman was successful at 133, as were teammates Derek Zinck at 157 and Troy Letters at 165. Juniors Brad Dillon and Jon Trenge won the Mountain Hawks other two titles. Dillon was the champion at 174 and the All-American Trenge repeated at 197. With three freshman titles, Lehigh became the first team in EIWA history with more than one freshman champion in the same year.
Lehigh’s six finalists, Cooperman, Zinck, Letters, Dillon, Trenge, and Sahl, all qualified for automatic bids to the NCAA Championships. Winning wild card entries for the Mountain Hawks were sophomore Terrance Clendenin at 125, and freshman Travis Frick at 184. Both wrestlers placed third at their weight in the tournament.
Letter’s would win the Sheridan Pin Award with a pair of pins in 3:38. Harvard’s Jesse Jantzen and Princeton’s Greg Parker shared the Fletcher Award, which goes to the wrestler with the most career points. Parker took home the Outstanding Wrestler Award behind a pin of Cornell’s Clint Wattenburg.
Lehigh won the team title by 15.5 points over host Cornell. Penn was third with 103.5 points.
Lehigh's eight qualifiers will travel to Kansas City for the NCAA Championships from March 20-22.
