Lehigh ends season with loss

Worcester, MA – Lehigh hung around in the first half, and put forth a valiant effort, but it wasn’t enough, as Holy Cross defeated Lehigh 3-0 on Saturday to finish the Mountain Hawks season.  Lehigh ends its season with a record of 7-12, 0-6 in the Patriot League, while Holy Cross, who will now look towards the Patriot League Tournament, goes to 11-6 on the season, and finishes up its league schedule at 4-2.

The Crusaders opened the scoring when Jenna Cook tallied her 14th goal of the season at the 16:11 mark, making the score 1-0, which it would stay until halftime.  Holy Cross then added two insurance goals in the second half, as Tara Welch and Laura Potts found the back of the net to set up the final 3-0 score.  The Mountain Hawks were out shot 18-4 on the afternoon, and had only four penalty corners, compared to the Crusaders nine.  Junior Jeanine Hoff started in goal and picked up three saves, and she was relieved at halftime by sophomore Meghan Gove, who turned back four shots.

First year Head Coach Julie Mazer is pleased with how her team improved over the course of the season, but realizes that it’s time to get to work for next season.  “In terms of today, we played a great first half, came out very aggressive, but then we had some trouble getting the ball out of our zone in the second half, and it cost us, as we allowed them to score twice.  Looking back at our season, I feel that we improved every day, and are much better, much more skilled than when we began.  That was one of our goals, to improve each day, and I feel as though we did that.”  Looking towards next year, Mazer is anxious to get back to work and see where this team can go.  “We are going to miss our four seniors, they have given so much to the program over the past four years, and they will be missed dearly.  But, we also have a strong nucleus of players returning, and that will help us when get going next season.”
