University Park, PA – Lehigh saw its school record ten game unbeaten streak come to an end on Wednesday night, as Big Ten member Penn State defeated the Mountain Hawks 1-0 out in Happy Valley. The loss was Lehigh’s first since September 13, when Princeton scored a 1-0 decision over the Brown and White. The loss also snaps a streak of five consecutive ties that the Mountain Hawks were going through. Lehigh now sits at 7-2-7 on the season, while Penn State improves to 7-8.
The lone goal of the contest was scored at the 53:52 mark, when Brian Devlin went top shelf to score the eventual game winner. Junior goalkeeper Sam Bishop had an all-around great game, as he turned back seven Nittany Lion shots on the evening, while Penn State goalie Matt Novchich, registered two saves. Lehigh was out shot by a 20-5 count, and had only three corners, compared to five from Penn State.
Senior Steve Fisher led Lehigh with two shots on the evening, while freshman John O’Reilly, junior Brandon Smith and sophomore Peter Classi each had one. Chad Severs led the Nittany Lions with four shots for the game.
