Telford, PA – Lehigh’s Nam-Kyu Park bested Fordham’s Gabe Allen on the second playoff hole to take home top individual honors after the Mountain Hawks already earned top team recognition in a tiebreaker over Siena at the 11th annual Don Mershon Classic. The event, held at Indian Valley Country Club, featured 15 men’s entries and nine women’s teams.
Park was the only player to shoot an even-par 72 on Sunday, and was the tournament’s sole leader at the halfway point. But Park’s 77 Monday, combined with Allen’s 74-75, forced the playoff. Both players posted a 149 over the 36 holes.
As a team, Lehigh shot 300 on Sunday and held an 11-stroke lead over second place Delaware. However, Siena’s 305 on Monday was good enough to tie the Mountain Hawks for first place with a total score of 618. Because of the tie, the two teams went to their fifth golfer as the tiebreaker, where Lehigh pulled out the victory.
Other individual scores for the Lehigh White team included freshman Alan Borowsky, who finished tied for fourth overall with a 152 (77-75), John Jaravata (75-84-159), and Will Weihenmayer (76-84-160). Senior co-captain Drew LaVine shot a 162 for Lehigh. The Lehigh Brown team was led by Jason Moloney’s 158.
The Mountain Hawks return to the links on Saturday, when Lehigh takes part in the Penn Invitational.
