BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Patriot League play continued Sunday afternoon from Grace Hall as Lehigh hosted the Colgate Raiders. After picking up a win over Holy Cross the day prior, the Mountain Hawks fell to the defending league champions in straight sets.
Lehigh (9-4, 1-1 PL) and Colgate (8-4, 2-0 PL) opened Sunday's match with a highly competitive bout in the first set. Both teams entered the match 1-0 against league opponents, and the match was closely contested for a large majority of the frame. Late into the first, the Mountain Hawks found themselves leading 23-19 with a chance to take the set off of the defending champs. However, the Raiders conducted a 6-0 run to regain the lead and claim the set victory.
The second set also looked to be moving in the same direction, as neither side was able to generate more than a three-point lead. Colgate would eventually take control, concluding the frame on a 6-0 run to win 25-17 after the Mountain Hawks pushed the score to within two points at 19-17.
Set number three provided much of the same, with Lehigh competing with the Raiders from the first serve. The score was tied at 13 apiece midway through the set, but a 12-5 run from that point secured the 3-0 win for Colgate.
Senior Lylah Washington and junior Megan Schulte led the Mountain Hawks with seven kills each. Makena Smith led the way for Lehigh with 16 assists while Kyleigh Brown recorded a team-high nine digs.
"The serve and pass game was the difference maker in all three sets," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "Colgate is a good team and they served well today."
The Mountain Hawks will have several days in between matches after playing three within five days. Lehigh is set to welcome Bucknell to Grace Hall on Friday, September 22 at 7 p.m.
"We regroup and get ready for the next weekend," said Keckler. "We got one more at home, and a win there as we head onto the road would be huge."
