Mountain Hawks Set To Face LIU, Iona, And Temple

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After months of preparation, the 2023 Lehigh volleyball season is finally upon us. The first task at hand for the Mountain Hawks will be the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing Cherry & White Challenge, a tournament hosted by Temple University in Philadelphia. Lehigh will face off against the likes of LIU on Friday at 7 p.m., Iona on Saturday at 4:30 p.m., and host Temple on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Lehigh enters the 2023 campaign following a 13-15 season in 2022. A year ago, the Mountain Hawks began their season without a hitch, winning all three of their matches by scores of 3-0 at the FAU Invitational. With All-Patriot League performers Megan Schulte and Emily Stewart back in the fold accompanied by 12 other returning players and six first-years, the Mountain Hawks will look to replicate last year's opening tournament this weekend in Philadelphia.

The Mountain Hawks' first opponent of the season will be the LIU Sharks, who are coming off of a 14-13 season while posting a 9-5 mark in NEC conference play. The Sharks were picked to finish second in the NEC ahead of this season and bring back the reigning NEC Rookie of the Year Amaris Smith as well as two additional all-conference players in Rumur Rouille and Camelia Melendez. Lehigh's all-time record against LIU is 6-2, having last faced off against the Sharks in 2011.

Saturday's opponent will be the Iona Gaels, who return two Preseason All-MAAC members in Hope Matschner and Jen Soto. The Gaels went 17-12 a year ago with a 12-6 record in the MAAC conference, falling to Quinnipiac in the tournament quarterfinals. Lehigh holds a 1-2 all-time record versus Iona, having faced the Gaels last in 2016.

Lehigh's final match of the weekend is against Temple, the host team of the Cherry & White Challenge. The Owls were picked to finish third in the AAC East Division and seventh overall in the conference. The team put up a 10-21 record in head coach Linda Hampton-Keith's first season at the helm of the program. The Mountain Hawks' all-time record against the Owls is 2-16, with the last matchup coming in 2021.
