Lehigh breaks three pool records with dominant swims at ESU Invite

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – It was a dominant afternoon of swims for the Lehigh women's swimming and diving team at the ESU Invite, totaling 12 first-place finishes in 14 events Saturday afternoon in the final competition of the regular season before Patriot League Championships. The Mountain Hawks competed alongside host East Stroudsburg, Kutztown and Millersville, three quality PSAC opponents. No team score was determined.
 
In addition to the first-place victories, Lehigh had three swimmers earn pool records inside Koehler Fieldhouse. Sophomore Julia Stevens broke the ESU pool record in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.97), while fifth-year senior Ann Foley's 23.20 in the 50-yard freestyle also was the fastest time in Koehler history. Junior Sarah Hardy swam the 100-yard freestyle, but as the 100-yard butterfly and broke the pool record with a time of 56.26.
 
The 200-yard medley relay led off the event with a 1-2 finish for the Mountain Hawks. Hallie Wilson, Maddie Dorish, Jordan MacDonald and Ashley Carper finished in first with at time of 1:48.01.
 
Lehigh had each of the top five finishers in the 200-yard freestyle with Maggie Mikalic earning first at 1:56.40. Willa Werwaiss came in second (1:56.69), Stevens third (1:58.20), Danielle Prekop in fourth (2:00.41) and Mary Mahoney finished fifth (2:00.94).
 
It was a similar scenario in the 100-yard backstroke with the Mountain Hawks claiming the top eight positions led by a win for Carper (58.14), with Noel Fresa finishing second (58.69) and Monica Wintermute (58.90) placing third.
 
The only event (besides the 1650-yard freestyle) that the Mountain Hawks didn't place first was in the 100-yard breaststroke, despite a podium finish for Annie Norris (1:11.49) in third place.
 
Lehigh took home the top two place finishers in the 200-yard butterfly with Stevens' pool-record time of 2:05.97 and a second-place finish for Natalie Martin (2:09.35).
 
Foley's win in the 50-yard freestyle (24.27) was the first of two victories on the day for the fifth-year senior as she also placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:16.18) with Mahoney (5:29.56) coming in third.
 
The 100-yard freestyle featured a 1-2-3-4-5 finish for Lehigh with Carper pacing the way with a time of 52.73. Sarah Horne placed second at 53.95 with Mikalic coming in third (54.61).
 
Lehigh got a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard backstroke as Willa Werwaiss (2:04.73) got the win, nearly eight seconds faster than teammate Norris (2:12.01) and 10 seconds faster than Prekop (2:14.40).
 
It was victory for Dorish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:29.87, while Carper (58.28) and Liz Olszewski (59.63) finished neck-and-neck in the 100-yard butterfly.
 
The Mountain Hawks also got the top four finishers in the 200-yard individual medley with Hardy winning at 2:10.38, followed by Norris (2:12.55), Horne (2:14.52) and Wintermute (2:17.65).
 
Lehigh closed the meet with a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay led by Sarah Manthorp, Fresa, Prekop and Foley (1:39.53), followed closely by Horne, Norris, Werwaiss and Grace Rogowski (1:41.92).
 
Lehigh take the week off from competition to get ready for the Patriot League Championships which kick off Feb. 16 in Annapolis, Md.
