Lehigh Drops 2-0 Heartbreaker to Army in PL Semifinal

11/3/2022 9:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer

WEST POINT, N.Y. - An Army goal in the 20th minute followed by a second goal in the 63rd minute was enough to send the Black Knights to the Patriot League Championship Game as they defeated the Mountain Hawks 2-0 on Thursday night on Clinton Field in Malek Stadium. Lehigh finishes the 2022 season with an 8-7-3 record overall.

Lehigh and Army battled for possession for the first 20 minutes of play during the first half. In the 20th minute, the Black Knights scored on their first shot attempt of the night. Army defender Lindsey Smith chased down a ball from Dara Murray. Lehigh goalkeeper Maggie Ousouljoglou came out to the edge of the 18-yard box to attempt the save but Smith slid the ball past her to give Army the early 1-0 lead.

Just six minutes later, sophomore Corinne Lyght had Lehigh's first shot of the game. Lyght launched the ball right into Black Knights' goalkeeper Sage Stroham's hands. In the 30th minute, junior Ava Schaller added the Mountain Hawks' second shot of the first half, sending the ball just wide past the right side of the net.

The Black Knights continued to bring the offensive pressure in the final ten minutes of the first half. Ousouljoglou picked up two saves for Lehigh to close out the first half and keep the score at 1-0.

Lehigh opened up the second half with a new offensive intensity, putting up two shots within the first eight minutes. In the 49th minute, Schaller had her second shot attempt of the game, resulting in a second save for Stroham. Just five minutes later, sophomore Hope Flanegin launched a shot from just outside the 18-yard box, sending the ball right above the crossbar.

Army responded with more shots of its own, one of which was saved by Ousouljoglou. The Black Knights scored in the 63rd minute to extend their lead to 2-0 and find themselves one step closer to clinching a spot in the championship.

The Mountain Hawks showed no signs of backing down as they added three shot attempts in three minutes, all of which were saved by Stroham.

Army led Lehigh 11-9 in shots while the Mountain Hawks led the Black Knights 3-2 in corner kicks. Ousouljoglou picked up four saves for Lehigh while Stroham finished with six for Army.

During the 2022 season, the Mountain Hawks defeated Navy for the first time since 2011 before scoring the most goals against the Midshipmen since 1993 in their 4-0 victory in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. Following its historic victory over Navy, Lehigh reached its first Patriot League Semifinal Game since 2018.

Lyght was the first Mountain Hawk to be named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year since 2005, when assistant coach Gina Lewandowski won her second straight honor. The sophomore forward joined senior Ryelle Shuey on first team All-Patriot League while Schaller, senior Mattie Murphy and graduate-student Erin Keefe were named third team all-league.
