Mountain Hawks Win Sixth-Straight with OT Victory over Bucknell

10/8/2022 6:45:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Sydney White scored the game-winning goal just 43 seconds into overtime to give Lehigh a 3-2 victory over Bucknell Saturday at Ulrich Field. The win gave the Mountain Hawks their sixth straight win, the program's longest winning streak since 1986, and handed the Bison their first Patriot League loss on the year.

Lehigh improves to 8-5 on the year and 2-1 in league play while the Bison are now 4-7 with a 3-1 mark in Patriot League this season.

Today's match, the Lehigh field hockey squad hosted their Breast Cancer Awareness Game. In partnership with St. Luke's University Health Network, they raised a total of $1,920 that will go to the Breast Cancer Compassion fund.

After a scoreless first quarter, Lehigh would have a scoring opportunity in the circle that first year Kiki Mes would send into the back of the cage for her first-collegiate goal off a pass from first year Maddie Kandra to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead. After the intermission Lehigh would notch its second marker of the contest with a goal coming off a penalty corner, one of the first corners of the contest, that was shot in by White off an assist from Mes. Bucknell's Kira Leclercq got the Bison on the scoreboard when she scored her second goal of the year, which was assisted by Isabella Pavlides and Mackenzie Kile, to cut their deficit in half with just five minutes remaining in the third quarter.

After some pressure from the Bison offense, Apa would strike for her second goal of the season off another penalty corner assisted by Kile and Leclercq. That would tie the match at 2-2 and the squads would head into overtime.

The Mountain Hawks needed just 36 seconds to earn a penalty corner in the extra ten-minute period, where White would rip a shot past the Bucknell goalkeeper to earn Lehigh a 3-2 victory. Defensively, Lehigh was able to hold Bucknell to eight shots, with senior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn making four saves. The Mountain Hawks earned seven total penalty corners, with six of them coming in the third quarter and the other in overtime, holding the Bison to three. Lehigh did outshoot their opponent, taking 11 shots, eight of them on goal while Bucknell recorded eight shots in the match. Lehigh will travel to Washington D.C for a Patriot League contest on Friday, October 14 at American. The match is scheduled for 3 p.m.
