BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team battled, showed life and fought throughout the match, but Lafayette (specifically Leanna Deegan) was too tough to handle as the Leopards the 3-1 victory (26-24, 21-25, 21-25, 25-27) Saturday afternoon in the The Rivalry presented by Lehigh Valley Health Network and Coordinated Health at Leeman Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
Lehigh won the first set while Lafayette took the last three on its way to the win. Set 1 was neck and neck between the two teams, not giving an inch, as Lehigh prevailed for the 26-24 victory following multiple match points. The Mountain Hawks (3-10, 0-3 PL) had just 10 kills with six errors and still managed to get the win.
After Lafayette took identical 25-21 victories in sets 2 and 3, the Mountain Hawks got out to an 8-5 push in the fourth set before three straight Leopard points made it 8-8.
It was four straight Lafayette points at 13-11, then four straight for Lehigh at 15-13 before four more for the Leopards at 17-15 and four more for the Mountain Hawks at 19-17.
Lafayette won six of nine points to lead 23-22 but Lehigh forced a 25-25 tie off a Sabrina Lancaster kill, only for the Leopards to claim the final two to come away with the 27-25 win and match victory.
The win is Lafayette's third straight over Lehigh dating back to the beginning of last season.
Lancaster led the Mountain Hawks with 17 kills, while Megan Schulte had 14 kills and nine digs. Makena Smith had 44 assists with nine digs and four kills, while Kyleigh Brown led the way with 20 digs.
For Lafayette, it was Leanna Deegan who put on a clinic, recorded 31 of the Leopards' 60 kills in the match. She also tallied 15 digs and hit .355.
Lehigh will re-group against Bucknell at 4 p.m. Sunday, still searching for its first Patriot League victory of the 2021 season.
