Mountain Hawks headline preseason with annual Brown and White Meet

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – One of the great Lehigh swimming and diving traditions takes place Friday night at 5 p.m. from Jacobs Pool with the annual Brown and White Meet.
The intrasquad meet, which occurs three weeks prior to the season opener at Loyola Maryland on Saturday, Oct. 16, is one of the most important preseason opportunities for the Mountain Hawks to find out who will be the swimmers and divers competing for top times and scores heading into the bulk of the regular season.
"I think the Brown and White is a lot about our underclassmen and we have a lot of them right now who haven't had a good shot at doing anything in the fall for us the last two years," said head coach Rob Herb. "The first years and sophomores are really looking for some spark performances and the freshmen came in hot. So we're expecting them to show the upperclassmen what they have.
"Our upperclassmen have pride, so I'm sure there will be some really good battles in the meet itself."
Over the years, Lehigh has had many individuals come through the program that have made a big impact on the squad. As the preseason has gotten underway and the new season is still a month away, the verdict is still out on who exactly will be the one carrying the torch this upcoming season.
"For us, there really is no one individual right now," Herb said. "We're still trying to sort things out with training, it's only been three weeks so it's still really early. I would just say that the first years have been really exciting to watch come in. And I'll be honest, the sophomores didn't do a lot last year because of COVID so we've never been in this spot with half of our team."
The men have six first years (Sean Davis, Connor Goodyear, Elvin Lee, Hyoseon Lee, Gavin Newcamp and Tim Norris) coming aboard the program in 2021, while the women have five (Sarah Gill, Natalie Martin, Maggie Mikalic, Willa Werwaiss and Monica Wintermute). Sophomores to watch include male and female freshman swimmers of the year Keagan Casey and Noel Fresa.
Normalcy is a big deal for the program on both sides as the schedule returns to the fall with seven opponents slated to compete against the Mountain Hawks during the 2021-22 season. The women (2-1) only had three scored meets in the spring with the men (1-1) having just two.
"Not only is it exciting for our athletes, but it's also re-assuring to one of their biggest crafts," said Herb. "It's something that they commit to and obviously they are here for their educations as well, but they're also here to compete in the pool and I want them to improve. Having that be back has really grounded everyone."
The state of the world also saw virtual meets in the spring and in the fall, competition with fans, family and alumni are about to return to Jacobs Pool, one of the most historic and most underrated settings for swimming and diving amongst NCAA Division I programs.
"It's really great to have everyone back to watch us," Herb said. "This program is a 100-plus year tradition and the parents, families and alumni that have supported us throughout not only the whole year, but especially during the height of the pandemic are excited to come back and support us as we begin to compete again. We have some of the greatest alumni and the greatest fans so we're excited to welcome everyone back here again."
