HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lehigh volleyball team showed life throughout on Friday night, but it just wasn't enough to escape a tough-hitting squad in Colgate, as the Mountain Hawks fell in straight sets (19-25, 21-25, 22-25) at Cotterell Court in the Patriot League opener for the 2021 season. Lehigh was led offensively by fifth years Sabrina Lancaster and Hannah Wright with 12 kills and 10, respectively, but fell to 3-8 overall to start the year.
Lehigh kept things close in the first set, but with a deficit of 8-7, the Raiders took five straight to lead 13-7. Able to cut it to four, Colgate held on for the 25-19 win.
Lancaster caught fire mid-way through the second set with three consecutive kills to put the Mountain Hawks ahead, 16-14, but the Raiders found a path to re-take the lead following four straight points off a service run from Ashley Chow to pull ahead, 23-19. Kills from Harper Snyder and Alli Lowe put Lehigh away in the second, 25-21.
The Mountain Hawks opened the third set with a 2-0 lead following back-to-back kills from Wright. With a 5-4 lead to open, Lehigh took four of the next five points to pull ahead by three at 9-6. The momentum shifted back to the Raiders, who took an 11-10 lead following a 5-1 run.
Lehigh led at 16-15, but that was all she wrote as Colgate finished the job by leading the rest of the way and win it, 25-22 to end the match.
The loss to Colgate is Lehigh's eighth straight dating back to Sept. 22, 2017. The Mountain Hawks had not won in Hamilton since the 2015 season.
With Lancaster and Wright leading the way in kills, freshman Emily Stewart also added eight, while freshman Megan Schulte finished with six. Freshman Makena Smith had 23 assists with eight digs, while Ally Thaw registered 12 digs to lead the team.
On Colgate's side, two-time Patriot League Player of the Year Alli Lowe dominated with 20 kills. Julia Kurowski had 30 assists with eight digs and Caroline Altergott finished with a team-best 12 digs.
The Mountain Hawks now travel three hours south to West Point, taking on the defending Patriot League Champion Army at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Black Knights swept Bucknell Friday at Gillis Field House. Live stats will be provided for the Mountain Hawks' final matchup of the weekend.
