BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh head coach Tom Gilmore has announced the Mountain Hawks' program awards for the recently-completed spring 2021 season. Eight student-athletes were recognized for their performances this spring.
The Archibald Johnston Cup is given annually to the program's most outstanding player, and also doubles as the Lehigh Athletics Department's Outstanding Athlete Award. This year's recipient is senior linebacker Pete Haffner. A team captain and second team All-Patriot League selection, Haffner led the Mountain Hawks with 28 tackles over Lehigh's three-game season. He added three tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery. Haffner was also an Academic All-Patriot League honoree.
Junior running back RaShawn Allen won the team's Scholar-Athlete award for the second straight season. The award is given to the player that displays prowess both on the field and academically. A two-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, Allen holds a 3.73 GPA in Lehigh's rigorous electrical engineering program. Allen rushed for 128 yards in three games, including a 49-yard touchdown scamper in the Lafayette game.
Given to the player that is "all football," sophomore defensive back TyGee Leach was honored with the James P. McConlogue Award, which also represents the Department's Coaches Award. Leach was Lehigh's lone first team All-Patriot League honoree. He started all three games at safety, tying for second on the Mountain Hawks with 18 tackles. Leach matched Haffner with a team-best three tackles for loss, and picked up his first career interception in the season-opener against Holy Cross.
Senior safety Divine Buckrham received the Barry Fetterman Award, given to the player who exemplifies loyalty, unselfishness and dedication to Lehigh football. Buckrham served as a team captain and a mentor to a youthful secondary group. A four-year contributor for the Mountain Hawks, Buckrham was recently recognized with the Athletics Department's John A. Cable award given to the outstanding graduating senior male leader.
The John C. Whitehead (Big LU) Award is given to the player who shows the most leadership with performance. This year's recipient is junior offensive lineman Justin Gurth. A second team All-Patriot League selection this spring, Gurth started every game for the Mountain Hawks at center this season and has now started all 25 of Lehigh's games on the offensive line since his arrival on campus in the fall of 2018.
Senior Chris Fournier won the Alexander G. Hahalis Award, given to the most outstanding lineman. Fournier started 25 consecutive games at left tackle for the Mountain Hawks over the last three seasons and also earned second team All-Patriot League honors. He was recently drafted in the third round of the Canadian Football League draft by the Montreal Alouettes.
The Nick Timko Awards, which also serve as the Engineer Effort Awards, are presented to the student-athletes who best contributed to the weekly preparation of the team on the practice field. This year's recipients are freshman offensive lineman Jackson Wiles and freshman defensive lineman Ben Murphy.
