Singles Success Helps Mountain Hawks Reclaim Presidents' Cup From Lafayette

GLADSTONE, N.J. – Three days after besting a 12-team field to win Lafayette's ABARTA Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational, the Lehigh men's golf team defeated the rival Leopards in match play to reclaim the Presidents' Cup. The Mountain Hawks broke a 3-3 tie by outscoring the Leopards 5-2 in singles to win back the cup 8-5 Thursday at Hamilton Farm Golf Club.
Six of Lehigh's seven players contributed one point during the doubles matches and the strong singles showing allowed the Mountain Hawks to even the all-time match play series at 5-5.
The day began with better ball play where the Mountain Hawks went 1-2. Freshmen Edmund Broderick and AJ Gilpin teamed up for a 2-up victory over Brendan Cronin and Alec Cwienkala. The Leopards claimed the next two matches to take an early 2-1 lead.
Lehigh dropped the first match in the alternate shot format but the four upperclassmen in Lehigh's lineup delivered victories to even the team score at 3-3. Sophomores David Hurly and Joey Dotta won 2-up over Martin Vanhaelst and Kaz Osawa, while senior Owen Quinn teamed with sophomore Sam Barton on a 1-up victory over Ryan Tall and Kaz Osawa.
Gilpin and Drew Steiner halved the first singles match and then Lehigh and Lafayette traded victories with freshman Marco Arosemena beating Creighton Hendrix 4&3 and Lafayette's Vanhaelst topping Broderick to tie the match at 4.5-4.5.
Dotta gave Lehigh the lead for good with a 1-up win over Berger and Hurly and Barton followed with consecutive 2&1 victories to lock up the match. Quinn and Tall halved the final singles match to account for the final margin.
Lehigh will be back on the course on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks travel to Bucknell for a tri-match with the Bison and Colgate at the Bucknell Golf Club.
