Mountain Hawks conclude season, fall to Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh volleyball team came into Saturday's match with the Crusaders needing a victory to clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament, but the Mountain Hawks fell, 3-1 (18-25, 11-25, 25-18, 18-25) to Holy Cross on the road, ending the season with a 3-6 record.
The Crusaders took complete control of the first set, getting a 17-8 edge early. Lehigh was able to cut the deficit to four at 22-18, but Holy Cross rattled off three straight points to get the 25-18 victory.
With Lehigh trailing 16-10, the Crusaders won eight straight points to take a 24-10 lead and nine of the last 10 to take the 25-11 win and a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 10-5 lead and held on to lead by as many as six points at 15-9, but the Crusaders won five straight points to trail 15-14. Three kills from Hannah Wright sparked the Mountain Hawks to seven of the final eight points to win the third set, 25-18.
Looking to clinch a berth into the Patriot League Tournament for the first time in program history, Holy Cross stormed out to a 12-5 advantage early in the fourth and really never looked back. Lehigh was able to tie the set up at 16, but Holy Cross rallied for six straight points to win the set 25-18 and the match, 3-1.
Senior Hannah Wright led Lehigh with 16 kills and 10 digs, while Sabrina Lancaster had 11 kills and 15 digs. Freshman Sarah Burau led the way with 22 assists and 10 digs on the afternoon.
The Mountain Hawks hit just .027 for the match with 37 kills.
Colgate, Holy Cross and Army West Point have clinched three of the four spots in the Patriot League Tournament with one more up for grabs on Sunday (either Navy or American).
