Mountain Hawks to visit Drexel in final dual meet of the calendar year

12/3/2021 2:18:00 PM | Men's Swimming and Diving, Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After last competing back in November against Lafayette, the Lehigh men's and women's swimming and diving teams returns to the pool on Saturday, taking on Drexel in a dual meet from Philadelphia at 1 p.m. The meet for the two teams is the final one until Jan. 22 vs. Bucknell at Jacobs Pool.

The women are off to a great start to the 2021-22 campaign, going 4-0 so far, a 2-0 mark in Patriot League meetings. The Mountain Hawks last came off a dominant 211-88 effort over Lafayette on Nov. 19, the team's 14th straight win over the Leopards in the all-time series.

Fifth year freestylist Ann Foley led the way with three first place finishes in the victory, while Hallie Wilson, Sarah Hardy and first year diver Sarah Gill each won two events to lead Lehigh to success.

Gill has been most impressive in such a small amount of time, with seven victories in her first eight events through the first four dual meets of the year.

The Lehigh women reeled off 13 first place victories as a team as Julia Stevens and Maggie Mikalic joined the four standout performers with victories as Stevens took first place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:41.00 and Mikalic was the victor in the 500-yard freestyle with her top time of 5:06.65.

The Mountain Hawks also picked up wins in the relays with first place finishes in the 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle.

The men survived a scare against Lafayette, pulling out a 154-134 victory in the end to extend their win streak over the Leopards to 30 straight meetings. The meet came down to the final few events as they got what they needed out of their top performers to ride to victory.

Lehigh won nine events in the meet, led by a pair of wins each for Owen Thomas, Glenn Lasco and Miles Cox. Senior diver Addison Cochran showed poise on the boards, getting two wins including 10 bonus points for his victory in the three-meter dive with a top score of 260.48.

The big moment of the meet came in the 400-yard medley relay as the men took home first place in the final event of the evening as the quartet of Tim Norris, Aiden McCurley, Alex Patti and Lasco swam to a time of 3:03.85.

The Mountain Hawks are 2-2 so far through the first four meets of the year and look to come out on top vs. the Dragons on Saturday.

The Drexel women are coming off a third-place showing at the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason. Multiple program records were smashed at the meet including five records for senior Lera Nasedkina alone. In their last tri-meet, the women defeated Northeastern (157-142), but fell to Boston College (161-38) on the road.

On the men's side, Drexel has struggled as a team as of late, finishing fourth in the Patriot Invitational at George Mason and falling to Boston College on the road.

The Mountain Hawk women are 16-11 all-time vs. Drexel, swimming against the Dragons for the first time since the 2016-17 season. The Drexel men lead the all-time series over Lehigh, 16-10.
