White Recognized with Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a strong all-around effort in Lehigh field hockey's big overtime win over Lafayette Friday, junior Sydney White was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The Mountain Hawks' starting center back, White helped lead a defense that allowed just five shots after halftime (including overtime). She also scored the game-tying goal in the 38th minute to help force OT.

White is the third different Mountain Hawk to win Defensive Player of the Week this season (along with graduate student Lenke Havas and sophomore Erica Steele) and sixth different Lehigh player to win a weekly award (along with junior Maddie Kahn, junior Sarah Bonthuis and first-year Guusje Hogendoorn).

Lehigh held Lafayette below its scoring average of nearly three per game entering the day. The Mountain Hawks outshot the Leopards 17-5 over the second half and overtime. Offensively, White scored her second goal in as many league games, coming off a penalty corner at the 37:45 mark – just 3:05 after Lafayette took a 2-1 lead. All three of White's career goals have all come this month (also at Merrimack and at Bucknell).

Havas was also recognized among the honorable mentions after having a hand in all three Lehigh goals – tallying two assists in regulation and the game-winning penalty stroke goal in overtime.

Lehigh improved to 4-2 in Patriot League play; the Mountain Hawks' four Patriot League victories are the program's most since 1996 when they had five. Lehigh will finish league play with a winning record for the first time since 2011 – the last time it advanced to the Patriot League Tournament. Lehigh's 11 overall wins are most since 1994 when it also had 11 during its Patriot League Championship season. The Mountain Hawks have now won three of their last five vs. Lafayette, the best five-game stretch in The Rivalry since winning six-of-seven between 1983-86. Prior to this 3-2 stretch, Lehigh had won three the previous 26 meetings, spanning 1994 to 2016.

The Mountain Hawks will be the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament if Bucknell beats Lafayette this coming weekend. If Lafayette wins, Lehigh will be the No. 4 seed. Before the tournament, the Mountain Hawks will close out the regular season with a nonleague showdown at Wagner on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 12 p.m.
