Mountain Hawks Fall at Bucknell in Patriot League Showdown

10/16/2021 4:54:00 PM | Field Hockey

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team opened the scoring just 6:59 in, but Bucknell responded with six unanswered goals to beat the Mountain Hawks, 6-1 on a rainy Saturday in Lewisburg. Junior Sydney White rocketed a shot into the back of the cage off a penalty corner, but the lead was short-lived. The Bison scored once in the first, twice in the second, once in the third and twice in the fourth for the victory. The Mountain Hawks had plenty of offensive pressure throughout, getting outshot by just one for the game. Lehigh falls to 9-5 on the season, 3-2 in Patriot League play.

"Bucknell beat us quickly in the first half with their corner execution," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "They were on point with their corner attack and defense – two areas we struggled with tremendously today. Once they gained momentum, we struggled to adjust and win it back. Stats were fairly even. We had our chances, but we just failed to capitalize in the areas we needed to for a win."

Lehigh controlled play early, firing three of the game's first four shots on goal. The fourth was White's second goal of the season (and her career) in the seventh minute, assisted by graduate student Lenke Havas.

The Bison pulled even in the final two minutes of the first quarter, off a penalty corner. Bucknell went on to turn their first three corner opportunities into goals, opening a 3-1 advantage at the 24:09 mark, which proved to be the halftime score.

The Mountain Hawks pressured early in the second half, but the Bison turned a play around midfield into a two-on-none fast break towards Lehigh junior goalkeeper Maddie Kahn, which turned into Bucknell's fourth goal of the contest.

Lehigh held a 5-2 edge in third-quarter shots and 7-6 advantage in the second half, but couldn't net another. The Bison would add a pair of fourth-quarter insurance goals for the 6-1 final.

Final shots were 13-12 in favor of Bucknell while the Mountain Hawks held a 9-5 edge in penalty corners.

"Bad games happen and fortunately we haven't had too many of them this year, so this serves as a great reminder that we can't afford to not play our best and expect a win," said Dallmeyer. "Now onto Rider."

The Mountain Hawks won't have much time to think about Saturday's defeat as they return home on Sunday to host defending NEC Champion Rider. Gametime is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
