Mountain Hawks ready to visit Virginia for Jefferson Cup

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Lehigh volleyball is back in action this weekend after five days off, heading to Charlottesville, Va. for the Jefferson Cup hosted by Virginia. The Mountain Hawks begin the tournament with a matchup against Elon at 10 a.m. on Friday, the Cavaliers at 6:30 p.m. and UNC Greensboro at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Lehigh's match with Virginia on Friday night will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a tough stretch of games, after falling to Columbia, Radford and Temple in the Cherry & White Challenge last weekend in Philadelphia. Prior to that, Lehigh was on a five-match winning streak with all five victories coming at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
Through the team's first 11 matches of the season, Lehigh has offensively been led by senior Lauren Bright, who has a team-best .405 hitting percentage with 56 kills and 32 blocks. Senior Emily Poole has found consistency on the floor with a .307 attacking mark and 61 kills. She is also tied with Bright with 32 blocks on the year. Both juniors Hannah Wright and Sabrina Lancaster have been excellent in hitting their marks on the court this season, both with 109 kills through the first 11 matches. Lancaster leads the way averaging 3.41 kills per set this season so far. Sophomore Sarah Carman continues to move along as the starting setter with 324 assists to her credit this year. She is currently averaging 9.82 assists per set.
Lehigh's first opponent of the weekend is Elon, who is currently 4-6 through its first 10 matches of the 2019 campaign. The Phoenix are coming off a tough loss to Winthrop on Tuesday, falling in straight sets. Elon previously took down Wake Forest in five sets on Sunday and Furman on Friday in four sets. Offensively, Elon is led by Nori Thomas, who is hitting .266 with 77 kills and is averaging 2.85 kills per set. Leah Daniel has the team-lead in kills with 159, averaging 4.08 per set in all 10 matches played. From a setter standpoint, both Kodi Garcia and Haylie Clark have been sharing the wealth with 215 and 211 assists, respectively. Libero Isabella Seman has 126 digs, while Kellyn Trowse has 112 this season. Jenn Krzeminski has a team-high 36 blocks for the Phoenix this season. This is the first matchup all-time between Lehigh and Elon.
The Mountain Hawks stick around Memorial Gym on Friday to take on host Virginia at 6:30 p.m. The Cavaliers are 5-5 so far this season, coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Bobcat Invitational in Athens, Ohio. Virginia beat UConn last Friday in straight sets before a victorious outing against College of Charleston in the nightcap, a four-set win. The Cavaliers fell to host Ohio in straight sets on Saturday. Virginia is hitting .209 as a team this season and holding opponents to a mark of .185. Individually, the Cavaliers have three players hitting above .300 this year in Mattison Matthews (.386), Megan Wilson (.364) and Milla Ciprian (.339). Jelena Novakovic has 106 kills this season, averaging 3.03 per set, while Wilson and Maddie Boylston have the team-lead in assists with 174 and 127, respectively. Kelsey Miller leads Virginia with 160 digs, while Ciprian has 45 blocks in 35 sets played this season. Lehigh is 0-3 all-time against UVA, last falling in straight sets back on Sept. 1, 2012.
UNC Greensboro will close out the weekend for Lehigh on Saturday in the final match of the Jefferson Cup and the final match of the non-league slate before the start of the Patriot League schedule. UNCG is 6-5 so far this season and has fallen in four of its last five matches, most recently falling to High Point at home on Wednesday in straight sets. The Spartans beat Iona on Saturday after losing to both Georgetown and William & Mary previously. Gabriela McHugh leads the way with a .310 attack percentage and 419 assists through 11 matches. Maria Esch has the team lead in kills with 128 this season, averaging 3.37 per set. Grace Howell has 145 digs this season to pace the Spartans, while Lauren Robeck (34) and Elayne Grisbee (28) lead the team in blocks. Lehigh is 0-1 all-time against UNCG, last falling in straight sets back on Sept. 14, 1994.
The Mountain Hawks have not won in any of the non-league tournaments away from Grace Hall this season and will look for different results this weekend in the Jefferson Cup before heading to Easton next Friday for the Patriot League opener against archrival Lafayette at the Kirby Sports Center.
