Mountain Hawks suffer setbacks against Radford, at Temple Saturday

9/14/2019 10:51:00 PM | Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA — After dropping a heartbreaker on Friday night to Columbia to start the weekend, Lehigh volleyball was unable to build any kind of momentum into Saturday's matches, falling in straight sets to Radford (17-25, 21-25, 20-25) and then to host Temple (18-25, 25-27, 19-25) to conclude the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing Cherry and White Challenge. With the defeats, Lehigh falls to 5-6 on the young season, as its losing streak extends to three straight matches.

After Radford handed the Mountain Hawks their first loss of the season one year ago, Lehigh had a tough time giving back the revenge on Saturday, falling quickly in the first set, 25-17. Lehigh hit .118 from the floor in that first set with only 11 kills. The Mountain Hawks hit over .250 in the following two sets, but were unable to figure out ways to score and take leads, falling to the Highlanders in three.

One bright spot for Lehigh was junior Hannah Wright, who continued to lead the way offensively with 18 kills, just two shy of her career-best 20 kills. Wright also had eight digs, just shy of a double-double. Sabrina Lancaster had nine kills for Lehigh, while Ava Hudson had three kills in eight attempts. Sarah Carman led the way with 35 assists, while libero Allison Garrett had nine digs.

Temple was going to be a tough opponent for Lehigh from the get-go, starting the year off 8-0 and being the host school for this particular tournament. The Owls lived up to the hype, controlling the match and getting the victory. Temple hit .300 in the first set to Lehigh's .100 as the Owls took a convincing 25-18 first set victory.

Lehigh hit sub-.200 for the entirety of the match, but Lehigh was able to force extra time in the second set. The Mountain Hawks were out in front, 24-22 before the Owls won three straight points to come away with the victory. Temple controlled the third set to come away with its ninth victory of the 2019 season.

Lancaster led the way with 11 kills, while Hudson had a career-high 10 kills to rank second for the Mountain Hawks. Sarah Carman had 25 assists while freshman Natalie Mavroidis registered 10 digs to lead Lehigh.

The Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend for the Jefferson Cup at Virginia, where they will face Elon, UNC Greensboro and the Cavaliers in Charlottesville for the final non-league contests of the regular season.
