Lehigh opens Cherry and White Challenge with tough loss to Columbia

PHILADELPHIA — It was a tough showing for Lehigh volleyball in the opener of the Hilton Philadelphia at Penn's Landing Cherry and White Challenge Friday afternoon, as Columbia snapped the Mountain Hawks' five-match winning streak in four sets, 18-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-25. The loss puts Lehigh at 5-4 after the first nine matches of the 2019 season.
Like Tuesday's match against NJIT, Lehigh found itself in an 0-2 hole to open the matchup against the Lions. The third set was much better for the Mountain Hawks, going on a 6-2 run to open the set before Columbia took a timeout. Lehigh led by as many as seven points, 17-10 after an Allison Garrett service ace and held on for the 25-18 victory.
The fourth and final set did not fall in Lehigh's favor in any way, as the Mountain Hawks came close a couple of times during the set before the Lions pulled off five straight points to run away with the set and the match, notching the 3-1 victory.
Despite all the team's struggles throughout the day, junior Sabrina Lancaster led the way with 15 kills and seven digs. Junior Hannah Wright had 14 kills to go along with three digs and three block assists. Senior Julia Pressly finished with eight kills and five digs with two block assists, while junior libero Allison Garrett had 10 digs. Sophomore setter Alina Lam played majority of the match with 28 assists after Sarah Carman registered the first 10 assists in the first set.
The Mountain Hawks hit .207 as a team throughout the match, hitting as high as .312 in the third and as low as .027 in the fourth.
Lehigh will look for retribution against Radford Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Temple at 7 p.m. to attempt to close out the weekend on a high note.
