Mountain Hawks tripped up by Duquesne, 2-1 in 2 OT

9/1/2019 4:26:00 PM | Women's Soccer

PITTSBURGH – The Lehigh women's soccer team played its third straight overtime match but after drawing the first two, dropped a 2-1 decision to Duquesne Sunday afternoon at Arthur J. Rooney Field. Duquesne's Lauren Bell scored the game winner 55 seconds into the second overtime period to give the Dukes their first victory of the season. Lehigh is now 0-2-2 after the first two weekends of the season.

"Each game we've improved, so we were a little bit more consistent, but we still have too many lulls in our intensity," Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus said. "We're improving, but we're not improving fast enough. Most of our mistakes aren't physical. They're just mental. It's early in the season, and we can understand that, be do need to play a little bit better for more consistent periods of time, and execute a lot better in key moments."

After falling behind early in the second half, senior Kayla Arestivo scored in the 69th minute to tie the game. Junior goalkeeper Miranda Royds made eight saves, including a penalty kick stop in the 76th minute to preserve a 1-1 tie.

The first half saw Lehigh out-shoot Duquesne 10-7 but the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes.

Duquesne broke through 18 minutes into the second half on an Alex Saturni goal, but Lehigh equalized six minutes later as Arestivo one-timed a crossing pass from classmate Maggie Wadsworth over the head of Duquesne keeper Megan Virgin and in for her ninth career goal.

A foul on junior Libby Andrews resulted in a penalty kick for Duquesne in the 76th minute, but Royds made a diving stop on Deena DeBaldo's attempt as the game remained tied.

"Miranda was solid," Lambinus said. "She made some saves. She has had some bigger saves in other games, but she was solid throughout. There wasn't anything she could do about either goal. That save on the penalty kick kept us around. She has been good for us all year."

Lehigh had the only three shots of the first overtime period, including a quality chance by sophomore Rebecca Van Siclen that missed off target. Bell scored the game-winner on the first opportunity of the second overtime period with an assist to Ashley Rodriguez. Duquesne is now 1-1-2.

"We gave up two goals. We gave up a penalty kick," Lambinus said. "We're giving away too many chances and we're just not taking advantage of the chances we're creating."

For the game, Lehigh held a 24-18 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corners. Arestivo led the way with five shots, while junior Lisa Kestelboym and sophomores Van Siclen, Erin Keefe and Abby Furtmann each had three.

"We had a really good opportunity but didn't finish it, Lambinus said. "We were pushing a little bit at the end of the game as well. We got better as the game progressed, but we have to put those balls away. There was a period of time in the second half where we weren't playing very well, but we held them off and then the penalty save raised us and after that we played well. We had a bunch of really good chances. We didn't test the keeper enough and didn't finish on a couple of rebounds when we had the opportunity to put them away.

Virgin made five saves for Duquesne.

The Mountain Hawks will continue their four-match road swing at Temple Thursday at 7 p.m. before concluding the trip next Sunday with a 1 p.m. match at Fordham.
