Mountain Hawks drop pair to Ohio State, VCU to open up new year

8/30/2019 11:30:00 PM | Volleyball

COLUMBUS, Ohio — It wasn't the day Lehigh volleyball had planned, as the Mountain Hawks fell in straight sets to Ohio State in the first matchup at the Covelli Center before falling in straight sets to VCU in the nightcap to start the season 0-2 overall at the end of the first day of the Sports Imports Classic.

Ohio State proved to be a worthy opponent, as the Mountain Hawks took an 8-7 lead early in the first set before the Buckeyes regrouped and went on a 17-7 run to get the victory. The second set started off on the right foot for Lehigh, taking three individual three-point leads before Ohio State called time down 10-7. With the score 22-20 near the end of the second set, the Buckeyes rallied off three straight points to claim the second set, 25-20.

In the third, it completely belonged to Ohio State, as they won 25-14 to get their first victory of the season on the brand new Covelli Center court.

The Mountain Hawks ended up hitting .083 for the match including .188 in the second set. Junior Sabrina Lancaster led the way with nine kills and added five digs, while senior Lauren Bright had seven kills in just 13 attacks for a hitting percentage of .385. Bright also had a block assist. Sophomore setter Alina Lam led the way in both assists (15) and digs (10) and registered her first double-double of the season in the very first match.

Lehigh is still winless vs. Ohio State, now 0-2 all-time against the Buckeyes.

In the second match of the day, Lehigh tried to regroup and figure out themselves against a VCU volleyball team that was swept at the hands of Texas Tech earlier in the day. However, the Mountain Hawks' struggles continued against a historically dominant Rams team.

Lehigh started off the first set on a 5-0 run before the Rams battled back for two points. Leading 17-16, the Mountain Hawks fell victim to yet another opponent run, as VCU won six straight points to take a 22-17 lead. The Rams' 11-3 run to end the first set resulted in a 25-19 win.

VCU capitalized on the good fortune in the first set by going on a tear and capturing the second set by a score of 25-8. Leading by a score of 13-7 at the time, VCU went on another run, this time a 14-1 run to close out the set, which included nine straight points.

The third set was much of the same, as Lehigh dropped the set, 25-16 and the match, 3-0 to fall to 0-2 to open up the 2019 season.

Sabrina Lancaster and senior Julia Pressly finished with six kills apiece, while Lauren Bright hit .364 with five kills and two block assists. For the second straight match, Alina Lam registered 15 assists, while junior Allison Garrett led the team with eight digs.

"I think we need to focus more on stronger communication and continue to find our groove," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "Perhaps we had some opening day jitters, but we had too many unforced errors by our players that made it too difficult to rebound.

"We are certainly better than this and today we had weaknesses exposed that will need some attention."

Lehigh will take on Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. to close out the tournament in Columbus.
