Lehigh opens up action at Mission Inn Spring Spectacular

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – With a round of 313 in the morning and 308 in the afternoon, the Lehigh men's golf team carded a total score of 621 Saturday on day one of the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular on the El Campeon Course at the Mission Inn Resort.
 
Junior Owen Quinn and freshman Michael Tanaka both broke 80 in both of their rounds Saturday, while senior Lee Hammerschmidt delivered the low round of the day for the Mountain Hawks, shooting a one over par 73 in the afternoon.
 
Quinn led Lehigh in the opening round with a 75 that included three birdies. He made just one in the afternoon, shooting 78, and sits in a tie for 66th place at 153.
 
After an opening round 81, Hammerschmidt bounced back with a season-low tying 73. He birdied the par 4 fifth hole and made an eagle three on 14. The only blemish of his afternoon round was a triple bogey on the par 5 17th hole. Hammerschmidt is tied for 71st place at 154.
 
Tanaka carded a team-best five birdies on the day, making three in a first round 77 and adding two more in an afternoon 79. He is tied for 80th place at 156.
 
Two strokes behind Tanaka is junior Ryan Kelly, who carded rounds of 80 and 78. Kelly matched Quinn with four birdies, as he is tied for 89th place.
 
Senior Max Redetzke is Lehigh's fifth scorer at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular. He is tied for 103rd place at 169 after rounds of 87 and 82.
 
Senior Eamon Marone is competing as an individual and sits in 108th place at 183 (91-92).
 
Kansas State leads the 17-team field at eight under par 568 (283-285). UCF is second, two shots behind, while Illinois State is third, three strokes off the pace.
 
Eleven players are under par after 36 holes, led by Jeremy Gandon of Kansas State, who sits at seven under par 137 (70-67). He leads Bobby Bai of UCF by one stroke entering Sunday's final round.
 
The Mission Inn Spring Spectacular concludes Sunday with the final 18 holes from the Mission Inn Resort. There will once again be a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m.
