Silver medal relay, two broken school records headline first day of PL Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Lehigh swimming and diving team started the Patriot League Championships up the way they wanted to, with the Mountain Hawks breaking two school records on their way to a strong start to the week.
 
The team of Owen Thomas, Tyler Christ, Teddy Smith and Greg Giannella broke the school record for the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:29.83, breaking the record previously held by Dean Shafritz, Christ, Jimmy Davey and Zach Tieke in 2018 (1:30.22). Thomas achieved the fasted 50 backstroke time in school history when he led off the event with a quick time of 22.98. The relay team finished fourth for the event.
 
Ann Foley also had herself a record breaking night, scoring a school record in the 200 free leadoff for the 800 free relay. Foley had a time of 1:46.05, breaking the Lehigh record of 1:47.54 previously held by Meghan Thompson in 2018. The 800 free relay team of Foley, Courtney Ferreira, Payton Miles and Samantha Gallego finished second place with a time of 7:18.05 behind Navy with a Patriot League record time of 7:06.23.
 
The women's 200 free relay team of Anna Francisco, Anna Thomas, Olivia Giampietro and Miles finished in sixth place with a time of 1:44.23.
 
The men's 800 free relay team of Walker Wilson, Kevin Fleck, Joey Rogers and Smith finished in fourth place with a time of 6:40.18.
 
On the diving side, Tyler Keller got himself a fifth-place finish with a score of 286.50.

After the first day of competition, the Lehigh men are currently are currently in third place with 85 points behind Army West Point (104) and Navy (133). The women are in a third-place tie with Boston U. at 60 points behind Bucknell (64) and Navy (80).
 
The meet continues on Thursday with the men's and women's 500 free, men's and women's 200 IM, men's and women's 50 free, women's one-meter dive and men's and women's 400 medley relay events. The finals begin at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
