Men search for first-ever win over Army; Women look for best start since 1999-00

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — It has been quite some time since Lehigh swimming and diving has been in action, just a little over a month to be exact since the both Mountain Hawk teams took down La Salle at Emmaus High School on Dec. 5.

Now, with just two meets before the Patriot League Championships Feb. 17-20, Lehigh is set host Army West Point on Friday at Jacobs Pool for Senior Day. The meet kicks off at 1 p.m. with diving and then the swimming portion will begin promptly at 3 p.m. with the second round of diving set to take place around 3:50 p.m.

Lehigh hasn't swam a dual meet in its own pool since Oct. 20 when both men's and women's teams took down Rider. However, both teams have found success on the road in various locations and hope that that particular success will translate well over to the home venue.

The Lehigh men are currently riding a five-meet winning streak dating back to Oct. 6 at Boston University. The last time out, the Mountain Hawks defeated La Salle, 154-117.

Facing off against Army West Point in the past has never been an easy task for Lehigh, who have fallen in all 47 meetings against the Black Knights. While Army (2-2, 0-1) has once again been atop of its game in 2018-19, the Lehigh men have been very dominant in the pool, which could make things interesting on Friday, as the Mountain Hawks look for their first-ever victory over Army.

Junior Walker Wilson returns to his home pool after very eventful months of November and December. He is coming off an impressive showing in the U.S. Winter National Championships and then another dominating outing against La Salle. Wilson has been a steady contributor of points in freestyle events this season, which has allowed the Mountain Hawks to benefit greatly. Wilson will have some steep competition from Army junior Kevin Doo, who has swam quick times in the 100 free event against Navy his last time out. Doo, like Wilson, has also been named Patriot League Male Swimmer of the Week once this season.

Freshman Glenn Lasco also returns to the pool following similar successes in November and December. Lasco has battled illness the past few months, but should be ready to go full strength on Friday as he looks to gain separation from the other swimmers. He has been a strong participant in freestyle races, but has also found success with his backstroke this season.

Additionally, the senior men will be recognized before the meet as Connor Guilfoyle, Croldy Veliz, James Mauk and Kian O'Brien swim Jacobs Pool for the final time in a competitive setting and each will look to make an impact in their respective events.

The first event of the swimming portion of the meet should kick off with a bang, as the 200 medley relay should bring a ton of excitement. Wilson, junior Tyler Christ, junior Teddy Smith and sophomore Greg Giannella have been very dominant in the first event of the night in many meets this season. The Black Knights will bring Brian McKendrick, Brady Almand, Johnny Ellery and Brandon McCredie, who set an Academy record of 1:27.41 in the relay against Navy.

The Lehigh men haven't had as much success as they had in the beginning of the season on the diving boards, but they have had steady scores out of sophomore Tyler Keller, who has impressed at times this season, leading to multiple honorable mentions from the Patriot League. Veliz will look to have a great showing in his final home meet, with his performance improving from meet-to-meet. Sophomore Hudson Kay leads the Army diving team, who have been a force in meets so far this season.

Like the men, the women have also been dominant in the pool this season, with their last defeat coming against Northeastern at BU on Oct. 6. The Mountain Hawks last time out, they beat La Salle, 164-108.

Junior Payton Miles and sophomore Ann Foley return to Jacobs Pool, looking to help Lehigh extend its winning streak to seven and achieve the team's best record since it started 7-1 in the 1999-00 season.

Her last time out, Miles beat out Foley in both the 50 free and 100 free with times of 23.99 and 52.51, respectively. She will look for similar success on Friday against the Black Knights on her way to the Patriot League Championships next month.

Junior Nicole Shek picked up a win in the 200 back against La Salle, while junior Tori Connolly got a first place finish in the 500 free.

Seniors Allison Morel, Courtney Ferreira, Kate Bergin, Melissa Segovia and Rayna Smilowitz will be recognized for Senior Day. All five seniors have been exceptional contributors to the Mountain Hawks' historic start this season.

On the diving side, sophomore Megan Fennell is back on the boards looking for an impressive showing against Army, who have junior Serica Hallstead, getting wins over Navy in both the one-meter and three-meter dives.

The Black Knights come to Jacobs Pool with a 2-2 overall record, 0-1 in the Patriot League. They're coming off a 199.5-100.5 loss to Navy on Dec. 1. This is the first time Army will come to Jacobs Pool since the 2014-15 season.

Lehigh is looking for its second consecutive victory over Army after winning last year's meet, 153-147 at West Point.
