Mountain Hawks drop heartbreaker at Colgate

9/26/2018 10:45:00 PM | Women's Soccer

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Lehigh and Colgate went back-and-forth for long stretches trading opportunities, but in the end, the Raiders scored in the 83rd minute to down the Mountain Hawks 1-0 on Wednesday evening. Lehigh had three shots on goal before the game was four minutes old and controlled possession for much of the first half, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Mountain Hawks will return home on Saturday to host Navy at 6 p.m.

"We took a bunch of strides tonight," said Lehigh head coach Eric Lambinus. "We had two tough trips this week in the middle of exam week (also at Boston University on Saturday). To come out and play at Colgate, who I'll be honest, I think is one of the best teams in the league, to push the tempo and control the game for a good amount of the game, I thought we deserved a goal. We just didn't get it.

"I'm proud of the team that despite not scoring, they're still working," Lambinus continued. "A lot of teams would quit and give up, but I'm proud of the fact that they keep working and keep going at it. We're getting better. Today was probably our most complete game."

Junior Maggie Wadsworth had each of Lehigh's first three shots, all on goal and all in the first 3:23. The Mountain Hawks fired eight of the game's first 10 shots.

Colgate increased its pressure as the first half progressed. In the end, the Raiders held a 10-9 edge in first-half shots, but only one was on goal (compared to five for the Mountain Hawks).

After Wadsworth's fourth shot on goal in the 57th minute, the Raiders grabbed momentum, firing eight straight shots through the middle stages of the stanza. Sophomore Miranda Royds made a sensational diving save in the 65th minute, but she couldn't stop Dom DeMarco's tough-angle shot in the 83rd angle. That proved to be the final shot of the game for either side as the Raiders wrapped up the 1-0 final.

Final shots were 19-12 in favor of Colgate while the Raiders held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Royds finished with three saves while Colgate's Kelly Chiavaro had six.

Lehigh will now return home on Saturday to host Navy at 6 p.m.
