Lehigh returns to take on La Salle at Emmaus Wednesday
12/4/2018 12:21:00 PM | Men's Swimming and Diving, Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving
BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh Swimming and Diving teams are back in action on Wednesday evening when they take the pool at nearby Emmaus High School against La Salle. The diving portion of the event begins at 3:30 p.m. with swimming getting underway at 6 p.m.
Â
Both men's and women's teams hit the pool for the first time collectively since taking down Lafayette on Nov. 16 in Easton.
Â
For the men, it will be the first time competing in a long time for majority of the team, but junior Walker Wilson and freshman Glenn Lasco have a wealth of experience heading into this meet against the Explorers after competing in the US Winter National Championships in Greensboro, N.C. last week. Competing in the long course meter format, Wilson and Lasco both will have advantages circling back to the short-course yard format when they compete on Wednesday.
Â
Wilson saw himself competing with some of the best athletes in the United States in Greensboro, even qualifying for two C Finals in the 200 and 400 meter freestyle events. He also had two times that became long course school records.
Â
Lasco didn't have as much success in the long course events as Wilson did, but his experience will not go unnoticed. He set a school record in the 100 yard backstroke event on Sunday in the Short Course Time Trial, swimming to a time of 49.56, breaking the previous record of 50.06 set by Tyler Lareau set in 2010.
Â
Wednesday night will also see the return of freestylist Joey Rogers, and the 200 yard medley relay which has included Wilson, Lasco, freshman Connor Sept and junior Teddy Smith who have also come on strong in recent weeks to help the Mountain Hawks improve to 4-1 on the season, the team's best start to a year since the 2011-12 season.
Â
On the diving side, it will be Tyler Keller returning to the board after a strong showing against Lafayette, picking up victories in both the one and three-meter dives.
Â
For the La Salle men (1-1), the Explorers are led by junior Marcus Forsgren, who is coming off a big performance in the 100 freestyle, swimming to a time of 44.89 in the Bucknell Invitational on Nov. 18.
Â
The meet will also be a homecoming for fifth-year freestylist Patrick Champagne, who hails from Macungie, Pa. and is a 2015 graduate of Emmaus High School.
Â
The women are looking forward to competing again after starting the year 5-1, matching last year's women's start to the season.
Â
Sophomore Ann Foley returns to action after another strong performance against Lafayette. Her last time out, she finished first in the 50, 100 and 200 yard freestyle events. Her biggest competition happens to be her teammate, junior Payton Miles who is steadily improving as the season continues.
Â
Senior Courtney Ferreira will look to build off her school record performance in the 100 yard individual medley at Lafayette, where she swam to a time of 57.50.
Â
The 200 medley relay was also strong against the Leopards, with Anna Francisco, Allison Morel, Malia Wolf and Miles earning a time of 1:44.07.
Â
On the diving board, sophomore Megan Fennell returns seeking a top-notch performance while senior Rayna Smilowitz is coming off a night good enough to qualify for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships after she scored 266.08 in the one-meter dive.
Â
The La Salle women are 0-3 to open the season and are looking for their first victory of the year. Junior Carrie Horan finished fourth place in the 200 yard breaststroke with teammate Collin Kessinger finishing in fifth place at the Bucknell Invitational.
Â
The atypical meet at Emmaus High School is a chance to promote swimming and diving in the Lehigh Valley, given the historical roots the sport has had in the area. A ton of top swimming talent that has been involved with Lehigh's program have started out in Lehigh Valley high school swimming programs and this is a big way to showcase that.
Â
"Emmaus has a very strong swimming community and we have a connection with that program," said head coach Rob Herb. "(La Salle head coach) Jamie Platt and I are two former local swimmers that are coaches at Division I schools and we've known each other for a very long time.
Â
"It's exciting, it's different. Our goal is to reach out to the Lehigh Valley community. Lehigh swimming wants to be the Valley's swimming team. We want kids to understand that we're a very good program that has kids that go to Olympic Trials, kids that go to Winter Nationals and kids that are earning their way through college and that we're a good option."
