BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Freshman setter Alina Lam was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday. This is Lam's second Rookie of the Week award of the season.
Lam helped lead the Mountain Hawks to a 2-0 Patriot League weekend record with five-set victories over Army West Point on Saturday and Holy Cross on Saturday.
She finished the weekend with two double-doubles, upping her season total to three on the year so far. Lam registered 30 assists and a career-high 17 digs against the Black Knights on Friday. She got the start against Holy Cross Saturday and tied her career-high 45 assists as well as a tie of her career-high 17 digs.
"We definitely felt her presence on the court this past weekend," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "She had a great flow with the offense, she did an excellent job with finding our hitters and making them successful.
"Coming into the weekend, we weren't sure she was going to play because she had been fighting an illness, so we were really excited she actually was strong enough and physically ready to compete for the week. She certainly has a lot of work she still needs to do, but we're really pleased with how she performed against Army and Holy Cross."
Lam has compiled 272 assists this season, averaging 6.80 per set. She is also averaging 2.45 digs per set this year, ranked third on the team.
Lam's growth in her freshman season at Lehigh and the way she has conducted herself on the court is a big reason why she has been honored with this award for the second time this season.
"Honestly, when she first came in, she was more on the quiet side, but she's really started to find her way to lead on the court," said Keckler. "It's not necessarily a big vocal aspect, but she's found ways to lead by knowing who to set, how to keep them engaged and defensively she's bringing a nice piece on that side. The biggest thing I'd like her to focus on right now is her serving and blocking."
The Mountain Hawks are 14-2 overall this season, 3-1 in the Patriot League and return home to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall Friday night at 7 p.m. for the much-anticipated Lehigh-Lafayette rivalry match.
