Volleyball Rolls to Victory Over Lafayette

9/30/2017 7:59:00 PM | Volleyball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks claimed a 3-1 victory in the first of two regular season meetings with archrival Lafayette on Saturday evening to extend their win streak to three-straight over the Leopards. Lehigh is now 3-0 in league play and extends its season win streak to seven-straight.

Lehigh (12-5, 3-0) compiled a .371 hitting percentage, its highest in league play this season and held Lafayette (3-13, 1-3) to a .209 team percentage on the day. Ana Spangenberg led all players once again with a match-high 16 kills on a season-high .452 hitting percentage. Julia Pressly also reached double-figures with her 10 kills on a season-high .444 hitting percentage.

The Leopards looked strong in the first set and went on an 8-4 in the middle of the set to take a 20-16 lead. The lead would be short-lived as Lehigh cut the deficit to one and then tied the match 22-22. The Mountain Hawks ended the set on a 5-0 run, led by two kills by Lauren Bright, to win the set 25-22.

Lehigh opened the second set with a 5-1 run, led by Jess Donaldson's two kills, and then extended the lead to 9-4 on two kills by Pressly. Lafayette chipped away at the lead and pulled to within two, but Lehigh put together a 4-0 run to take a 21-15 lead. The six-point buffer was all LU needed as they carried the momentum to the end and won the second set, 25-19.

The Leopards found a rhythm offensively out of the break and put together their best single-set hitting performance of the night with a .346 percentage. Lehigh was unable to match Lafayette's efficiency, only hitting .185 in the set. The Mountain Hawks took a 10-9 lead, but that was the last lead they would have in the set as Lafayette marched on to a 25-18 victory.

The Mountain Hawks flipped the script in the fourth and put the match away with a 25-13 victory. Lehigh hit .519 in the set, led by four kills and a .571 hitting percentage by Pressly. Lafayette accumulated just eight kills in the frame on a dreadful .038 hitting percentage.

Lehigh will look to close out its four-match home stand with its fifth-straight home victory and keep its unblemished league record in tact with a 1 p.m. match against Bucknell. The match will be streamed live for free on the Patriot League Network.
