BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks completed their Patriot League opening weekend with a pair of victories following Saturday's 3-0 win over Holy Cross. Lehigh has now won 18 of the last 19 meetings with the Crusaders.
Ana Spangenberg lit it up offensively for Lehigh (11-5, 2-0) with a match-high 19 kills on a .432 hitting percentage and was the only Mountain Hawk to reach double-figures in the match. Emily Poole paced the LU net minders with four total blocks on the day, while Megan Polak led all setters with 36 assists to go along with five kills on a .500 hitting percentage.
Lehigh stepped out to an early lead to begin the first set and forced the Crusaders (3-11, 0-2) to play catch-up the rest of the way. Holy Cross fought back and took a 23-21 lead, but LU ended the match on a 4-0 run led by three straight kills by Spangenberg to clinch a 25-21 victory.
It was Holy Cross who jumped out to an early lead in the second set. After falling behind 9-4, the Mountain Hawks went on a 12-point run when Jess Donaldson took over the serving duties to take a 16-9 lead. Once in the lead, LU never looked en route to a 25-19 win.
The Mountain Hawks opened up a 5-1 lead to start the third set, but the Crusaders battled back and made it a seesaw battle the rest of the way. Lehigh abruptly ended the set with back-to-back kills by Spangenberg and Kelly Bennett to win the set 25-23.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 30 when they host Lafayette at 4 p.m.
