Volleyball Set to Host Annual Crosstown Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh will continue its early season home stand when it hosts the annual Crosstown Invitational this weekend, beginning Friday with a match against Saint Francis (Pa.) at 7 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday against Central Connecticut State (10 a.m.) and Norfolk State (4 p.m.). All Matches will be held in Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
The Mountain Hawks (2-2) are coming off a four-match set in last weekend's season-opening home stand in which they posted 3-0 victories over Saint Peter's (25-11, 25-11, 25-13) and Coppin State (25-15, 25-17, 25-21). SFU (1-2) comes to Bethlehem following a three-match stint at Navy's Dickmann Invitational where the Red Flash posted a 3-0 victory over Akron. CCSU (1-2) opened the season with three matches at the Stetson Invitational in DeLand, Fla. where the Blue Devils picked up a 3-2 win over the host Hatters. Norfolk State will open the season Friday in the opening match of the Crosstown Invitational against SFU at Lafayette's Kirby Sports Center.
Lehigh Fall Classic All-Tournament Team honoree Lauren Bright led the Brown and White with 1.08 blocks per set and 14 total blocks last weekend. The sophomore also ranks among the team leaders with 21 kills to go with a .200 hitting percentage on the season. Junior outside hitter Victoria Hemsath opened the season with a team-leading 32 kills last weekend with a strong .282 hitting percentage and a 2.67 kills-per-set average. Junior setter Megan Polak leads the squad with 6.00 assists per set and junior libero Emily Develle leads the team with 64 digs at a rate of 4.92 digs per set.
SFU posted a 5-22 record last season and was picked sixth in the Northeast Conference preseason predictions. Kelsey Roush will be a player to watch as she leads the Red Flash offense with 32 kills and a 3.56 kills-per-set average through the first three matches this season.
CCSU is coming off a 14-13 campaign last year and was tabbed third in the NEC preseason rankings after qualify for the NEC postseason for the 13th time in the past 14 seasons. The Blue Devils are led by 2016 NEC Rookie of the Year Morgan Woycik who owns a team-best 3.29 kills-per-set average this season.
The Norfolk State Spartans earned the fifth-place spot in the Northern Division of the MEAC preseason rankings after posting a 7-20 overall record a season ago.
Lehigh owns a winning record in the all-time meetings with Saint Francis (10-3) and Norfolk State (1-0) with a 5-5 record against CCSU.
