ST. LOUIS – Five Lehigh wrestlers reached the championship round of 16 and several bonus-point wins have the Mountain Hawks in the top five after session one of the NCAA Championships, Thursday afternoon at Scottrade Center. The Mountain Hawks went 6-2 in the opening session with a fall, a forfeit win and two major decisions. Lehigh led the team race for most of the first half of the round and finished the session with 12 points as the Mountain Hawks sit in a tie for fourth place.

Lehigh advanced wrestlers into the round of 16 at each of the first four weights. Junior Darian Cruz picked up his sixth fall of the season, using a cross-wrist tilt to pin two-time All-American Dylan Peters of Northern Iowa in just 52 seconds in his first match. Next up for the fourth-seeded Cruz will be No. 13 Shakur Laney of Ohio.

At 133, sophomore Scott Parker topped Colby Smith of Appalachian State 11-3. Parker broke open a scoreless match by reversing Smith onto his back for six points early in the second period. He added takedowns in the second and third periods plus riding time advantage to earn a date with No. 8 Zane Richards of Illinois.

Senior All-American Randy Cruz opened his bid for a second NCAA medal with a 6-0 decision over Wisconsin's Cole Martin. Cruz scored an early takedown and a strong ride plus a takedown in the second period on his way to the victory. The 11th-seeded Cruz will now face No. 6 George DiCamillo of Virginia on Thursday night.

Senior Laike Gardner picked up bonus points for the team just by making weight and making his way to the mats. Gardner was a winner by forfeit at 149 when Michigan's Zac Hall withdrew from the tournament Thursday morning. He will now face No. 7 seed Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa, who edged Gardner in sudden victory in the quarterfinals of the Southern Scuffle.

The first Mountain Hawk on the mats Thursday was senior Doug Vollaro, who used a takedown with 12 seconds left in sudden victory to edge Zack Parker of Ohio 3-1 in the pigtail round at 285. Vollaro then was locked up in a tight battle with No. 5 seed Nick Nevills of Penn State. Vollaro scored the first takedown in the second period, but a third period score for Nevills proved to be the difference in a 4-2 decision for the Nittany Lion.

Sophomore Ryan Preisch became Lehigh's fifth wrestler in the round of 16, avenging a regular season loss with a dominant 9-0 major decision over Jordan Pagano of Rutgers at 174. Preisch scored takedowns in each period, getting the last in the final seconds to clinch the major, plus two escapes and 3:14 of riding time advantage. The sixth-seeded Preisch will next face No. 11 Alex Meyer of Iowa in the round of 16.

Freshman Cole Walter was the lone Lehigh wrestler not to win a match in Thursday's first session. Walter dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 12 seed Austin Matthews of Edinboro, giving up a first period takedown plus two escapes and riding time while scoring just a first period reversal.

Lehigh is tied with Iowa and Missouri for fourth, two points behind third place Ohio State. Penn State leads with 16 points, while Oklahoma State is second with 15.
