Midlands Brackets/Results

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Lehigh deferred freshman Dylan Ammerman entered the 55th Midlands Championships with just a 2-2 record and fourth place finish at the Wilkes Open last week to his career ledger. Ammerman opened the Midlands with back-to-back pins over seeded opponents to become the top performer for the 10 Mountain Hawks at Sears Centre Arena.

The Mountain Hawks had five attached wrestlers and five unattached wrestlers compete in the two-day tournament, and Ammerman finished just one win shy of placing at one of the nation's toughest in-season tournaments.

Competing at 184, Ammerman opened his tournament by pinning No. 7 seed of host Northwestern in 3:58 and followed that win up with a first period pin of No. 10 seed Martin Mueller of South Dakota State.
A 4-2 loss to No. 2 Nick Gravina of Rutgers left Ammerman as the only Lehigh wrestler to reach Saturday's second day of competition. In the round of 12, Ammerman was unable to hold an early lead as he fell to Penn's No. 6 seed Joe Heyob 10-4.

In the placement round, Ammerman scored a takedown and two point near fall to lead 4-1 after one but after Heyob escaped for the only points in the second, he turned Ammerman for a pair of four-point near falls in the third to earn a spot in the top eight, while Ammerman's tournament ends at 2-2.

Six of Lehigh's remaining nine entrants won at least won match, with unattached freshman Jimmy Hoffman the only other Mountain Hawk to win a bout in the championship bracket. Hoffman defeated Purdue's Parker Filius 8-2 in a pigtail round bout at 141 before dropping his next two matches by major decision.

Four of the five other Mountain Hawks to win at least one match all were eliminate in Friday's evening session. Unattached freshman Matt Parker went 1-2 at 125 while classmate Dan Moran won a pair of consolation bouts at 133 before bowing out against Wisconsin's Jens Lantz.

Unattached sophomore Kyle Gentile received a bye into the round of 16 at 197 and after a one-point loss to Iowa's third-seeded Cash Wilcke, won his first consolation bout over Central Michigan's Landon Pelham before being eliminated. Sophomore Paul Dunn went 1-2 at 184, while junior Camden Fischer posted a 1-2 mark at 149 and was eliminated near the end of Friday's morning session.

Also competing for the Mountain Hawks were sophomore Joe Lobeck (unattached – 133), sophomore Ryan Pomrinca (141) and junior Tom Murray (197).

Seventeen Mountain Hawks, including most regulars, are scheduled to compete in the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, beginning Monday at 10 a.m. in Chattanooga, Tenn.
