Ice Hockey Celebrate OT Win vs Temple

Lehigh Ice Hockey Wins a Thriller Against Temple

12/2/2017 11:59:00 AM | Men's Ice Hockey (ACHA D1)

The Mountain Hawks come away with a 7-6 overtime win

The Lehigh Mountain Hawks pulled out an exciting win against the Temple Owls by scoring in overtime to win 7 to 6 despite being down 4 to 0 early in the second period.

Lehigh dominated the first period as play was mostly in the Temple end even though the Owls owned a 14 to 6 shot advantage by the end of the period. Late in the initial period, Temple got on the board with a short-handed breakaway to make the score 1 to 0.

The second period started off poorly for the Mountain Hawks as Temple was able to score three goals early in the period to take a 4-0 advantage.   Lehigh finally got on the score sheet when Leo Pawlika sent Jason Langevin on a breakaway and Langevin blew the puck by the Owls goaltender. Thirty seconds later, Keith Calvaruso skated the puck up the ice and made a pass to Cameron Menna, who took a shot on net and Langevin buried the rebound for his second goal of the game. Now, with the score 4 to 2,  Lehigh was gaining momentum. The second period ended 4-2 in favor of the Owls.

The third period started with Will Kazel taking a shot from his defensive position and Ryder Griffith tipping the puck past the Owls goalie. Cody Triolo got the second assist.  Soon after, the Mountain Hawks went on the power play and capitalized on the opportunity when Pawlika moved the puck to Menna who shot the puck past the Temple netminder. Again, Triolo got the second assist.

With the score tied at 4 to 4, Lehigh was building confidence and was looking for the win. Unfortunately, Temple scored off a defensive zone face off to take the lead again at 5-4.  The lead did not last long as the Mountain Hawks went on the power play and scored when Langevin took a shot from the top of the circle and Jake Kurz redirected the puck into the net. With 2 minutes to go in the game, Lehigh went on the power play again and scored exactly as the previous power play with Langevin shooting and Kurz tipping the puck past the Owls goalie.

With Temple behind by a goal and 1 minute left in the game, they called timeout as the players went to center ice for the face off following the goal. Temple won the face off and got the puck deep into the Lehigh zone.  An Owls player passed the puck across the ice and it deflected off a Lehigh defenseman's skate and into the net to tie the game.  The game went into overtime with the score locked at 6 to 6.

Under the new 3 on 3 overtime format, the puck moved up and down the ice quickly until Langevin went one on one with an Owls defenseman and fired the puck past the goalie for his hat trick and the Lehigh win.  The game was a great example of the determination and competitiveness of the Lehigh ice hockey team.

The two teams meet again at the Northeast Skate Zone in Northeast Philadelphia on Saturday.
