Lehigh Completes Weekend Road Trip with Loss at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate defended its home court and handed Lehigh just its fourth loss in Patriot League play this season with a 3-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders improve to 13-9 overall and 4-6 in league play, while the Mountain Hawks are now 15-9 overall and 6-4 in the league.
Lehigh posted a 43-42 kill margin, led by Ana Spangenberg's 15 kills on a .333 attack percentage. Megan Polak aided the offense with 25 assists on the day. Colgate had three players reach double-figures, led by Alli Lowe's match-high 17 kills.
Lauren Bright led all players with seven total blocks on the day. The middle blocker now has seven or more blocks four times this season. Emily Develle led Lehigh with 14 digs, while Spangenberg chipped in with 10.
The two sides traded blows in the first set as they alternated runs. Colgate eventually broke out to a 15-10 lead and extended it to a 18-12 advantage to force a Lehigh timeout. Out of the break, Lehigh cut into the lead with a 3-1 run to force Colgate into a timeout. The Raiders finished strong out of the break with a 6-3 run to clinch the first set, 25-18.
Lehigh had the upper hand to start the second, breaking out to a 9-4 lead with eight kills from three different players. Out of a Colgate timeout, Lehigh extended the lead to 12-5, but then the errors started to mount for LU and Colgate racked up a few key kills to cut the deficit to 15-12.
The Raiders started to heat up and went on a 6-1 run to take an 18-16 lead and forced another Lehigh timeout. The Lehigh errors mounted again and fueled a run which put Colgate in position for set point. The Mountain Hawks made one last stand and ripped off three-straight points on three errors by Colgate, but a kill by Katie Stansbury sealed the 25-21 win.
The Mountain Hawks again built a lead through the midway point of the third set, but Colgate clawed its way back once more. Lehigh clung to its slim lead deep into the set, leading 19-17 at one point. The Raiders got a huge lift as they went on a four-point run led by three-straight kills by Alli Lowe to take their first lead of the set, 21-20.
The later stage of the set was a scramble as the two sides traded points. The set eventually ended as Lehigh surrendered two points on back-to-back attack errors to give Colgate the 26-24 victory and the sweep.
Lehigh will continue its five-match league road stand Friday with a trip to Bucknell, followed by trip to Lafayette on Saturday.
