BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh volleyball team was competitive in every set, but couldn't get over the hump in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-22) defeat to Colgate on Saturday in Leeman-Turner Arena. Freshman Ana Spangenberg led the Mountain Hawks with 12 kills while sophomore Emily Develle posted a game-high 17 digs. Lehigh will look to bounce back net Saturday when it hosts American on Senior Day.
Spangenberg enjoyed a strong afternoon as she hit .476 for the game. Freshman Julia Pressly also tallied eight kills. Sophomore Megan Polak recorded 19 assists while junior Bonaire Berry posted 14. Junior Kelly Bennett had a team-high three blocks.
"I thought the effort was really good. I think our effort just about every time we've come out for a match has been excellent. It's just our execution," said Lehigh head coach Bob Bertucci. "We make a couple silly mistakes, a few unforced errors per game, which we have to clean up. A part of it has to do with being able to control your emotions. We have a young team and they want to be successful so badly."
Colgate jumped out to leads of 6-1 and 9-2 in the first set, but the Mountain Hawks used a 5-1 run to pull within 10-7 following a kill from Spangenberg and an attack error. Lehigh hung around, but couldn't pull any closer than three. A kill from freshman Emily Poole pulled the Mountain Hawks within 15-12, but the Raiders responded with six of the next seven points to take a 21-13 lead, on their way to the 25-17 first-set victory.
In the second set, the Raiders again jumped out to an early lead, opening a 4-0 advantage. However, Lehigh used five straight points to turn an 8-4 deficit into a 9-8 lead, which included a pair of service aces from Bennett. The teams went back and forth over the ensuing points until Colgate began to pull away. The Raiders posted four straight points to open a 17-12 advantage, Lehigh came back within two at 18-16, but Colgate ended the set on a 5-0 run for another 25-17 set win.
Lehigh began the third set with the first three points behind a kill from Spangenberg and consecutive kills from senior Katie Jennison. The Mountain Hawks led until the middle of the set, when Colgate posted four straight points to break a 15-15 tie and take a 19-15 advantage. Lehigh got back within two at 22-20, 23-21 and 24-22, but the Raiders went onto the 25-22 set win and 3-0 match victory.
The Mountain Hawks will look to bounce back when they host American next Saturday (Nov. 5) on Senior Day. Gametime is set for 4 p.m. Lehigh will then close the regular season with games at Army West Point and Holy Cross on Nov. 11 and 12, respectively.
"Right now, the important thing is that we have to be focused on getting better," said Bertucci. "We need to eliminate some of the errors that are being made and need to continue to improve."
