BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team kicks off its 2015 campaign this weekend when the Mountain Hawks head to the JMU Classic for a three-match tournament. Lehigh will play two matches Friday beginning with an 11 a.m. contest against Northern Arizona before taking on St. Francis Brooklyn at 5:30 p.m. Action concludes Saturday at 1 p.m. against host James Madison.
The 2015 Mountain Hawks aim to make their fifth-straight Patriot League Tournament appearance and build upon back-to-back 20-plus win seasons that included a 2014 Patriot League Championship appearance. The squad will be led by a trio of preseason All-League selections in seniors Amy Matula and Stephanie Slater and junior Mariah Brantley. Matula and junior Katie Jennison have been tabbed as captains of the 2015 squad. The Mountain Hawks finished second in the Patriot League a season ago with a 14-2 league record that was part of a 22-10 overall mark.
Lehigh opens action at the JMU Classic Friday at 11 a.m. against Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks finished the 2014 campaign with a 21-8 record that included an 11-5 mark in Big Sky play. The Jacks were picked to finish second in their conference this season and will be led by returning All-Big Sky performers Janae Vander Ploeg and Jensen Barton. Vander Ploeg finished second on the team with 324 kills last season, while Barton recorded a team-best 1,075 assists. Friday's match will be the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and NAU.
St. Francis Brooklyn will be looking to rebound from a 2-26 season that saw the Terriers go 0-12 in NEC play. The Terriers return their top seven kills leaders from last year's campaign, led by junior outside hitter Domenique Gerard who led the squad with 179 kills. Friday's 5:30 p.m. contest will be the second-ever match between Lehigh and St. Francis Brooklyn. The Mountain Hawks cruised to a 3-0 (26-24, 25-11, 25-22) win over the Terriers in 2013 inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.
Host JMU put together a 17-14 season in 2014 that included an 8-8 mark in CAA play. The Dukes were projected to finish second in the conference this season and will be led by preseason All-CAA selection Janey Goodman who tallied a team-best 369 kills last year. The Mountain Hawks are 1-7 all-time against JMU, with the Dukes winning the most recent matchup 3-2 in 2011.
Following this weekend's JMU Classic, the Mountain Hawks will make their home debut in Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Sept. 4-5 when Lehigh hosts the Crosstown Invitational.
