
Ruffing wins 50 free title to lead Lehigh on day two in Lewisburg

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Kaitlyn Ruffing won her second career Patriot League individual title as the sprinters carried the day for Lehigh on day two of the Patriot League Championships, Thursday at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. Last year's league champion in the 100 free captured the 50 free on Thursday setting one of three new school records for the Mountain Hawks, who sit in third place with 179 points.

Lehigh placed three swimmers in the top 11 of the 50 free with Ruffing posting the top qualifying time of 23.06 in the morning and then breaking her own school mark with a swim of 22.91 seconds in the finals to claim the title. Ruffing edged rival Molly Mucciarone of Army by .05 seconds with both swimmers meeting the NCAA "B" standard. Sisters Carolyn and Julianne Koch also scored in the 50 free, with junior Carolyn finishing seventh with a time of 23.54 and freshman Julianne finishing third in the B final and 11th overall with a time of 23.73 seconds.

Thursday's evening session began with the 500 free. Freshman Meghan Thompson qualified for the A final, finishing eighth with a time of 4:58.13. Sophomore Cora Summerfield won the consolation final, bettering Thompson's time with a strong 4:53.50 swim.

The 200 yard individual medley saw the school record fall twice. Sophomore Kelly Carroll broke her own school record in the morning with a preliminary time of 2:05.25. Carroll finished eighth in the finals with a time of 2:05.28. Junior Courtney Patterson gave Lehigh its second straight B final win as she broke Carroll's mark from earlier in the day with a swim of 2:04.64 to finish ninth overall. Also in the 200 IM, senior Alissa Leung finished 14th overall with a time of 2:07.16.

In the final event of the day for the women, Lehigh's 200 free relay team set the Mountain Hawks' third school record of the day and their fifth of the championships. The Koch sisters, Carroll and Ruffing finished third overall with a time of 1:33.20.

Thursday also featured the women's one meter diving competition with freshman Emily Speakman competing but failing to qualify for the finals.

Navy continues to hold the women's lead with 305 points, while Bucknell is second with 231. Lehigh leads Boston University by a mere two points for third.

The Patriot League Championships continue Friday from Bucknell with preliminaries set for a 10:30 a.m. start and finals set to begin at 6 p.m.
